Mental Health in the Black Community - In this episode, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jasmine Lamitte, a licensed social worker in Los Angeles, California. Jasmine has an impressive professional background, having earned a BA in Psychology and African Studies from Pomona College, an MSW in Clinical Children & Families concentration from the University of Chicago, and being an LCSW since 2016.
She's also the author of The Black Mental Health Workbook, 2022, and has an Instagram account called @socialworksage. Jasmine shares her experience as a social worker in school settings, where she worked as the director of mental health for 24 schools and now as the director of mental health for a nonprofit organization that works with kids in foster care.
We dive into the struggles of children's mental health, particularly in the black community, and the overdiagnoses of psychotic disorders. She also explains how race can affect a child's mental health and talks about the history of mental health and the black community, along with the misinformation and faulty studies that have perpetuated it.
During the conversation, Jasmine discusses the common feelings that black students experience when growing up in LA, and she explains how mindfulness practices have significantly helped the children she works with. If you're interested in learning more about mental health in the black community, particularly in children, this episode is a must-listen.
Tune in now to hear from an experienced licensed clinical social worker who has dedicated her career to helping children overcome their mental health struggles. Thank you for visiting the Mindful Space youtube channel. Be sure to like and subscribe if you enjoyed this in-depth conversation.
