The Strength to Live: A Deep Dive into Mental Health Advocacy with Cindy Tank-Murphy
Manage episode 430283023 series 2935694
My guest today is Cindy Tank-Murphy. Best-selling author, international speaker, and mental health advocate, Cindy Tank-Murphy offers a unique perspective on the much-needed conversation around overcoming the grief from suicide and the mental health epidemic around it. Trained in Mental Health First Aid and certified in QPR, a suicide prevention technique, Cindy believes we can eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness through awareness and open dialogue that will ultimately save lives. Cindy’s life was forever changed on July 22, 2014, when her father ended his life, and she was left with a choice to make. She could allow shame, guilt, and sorrow to swallow her whole or seek better understanding through education and a new version of herself through vulnerable self-discovery. Thankfully, she chose the latter, which began a massive shift in her healing journey, one that has had a profound and lasting impact on her future and called her to be a compassionate voice regarding mental health. Her gift is her desire to help others heal by exploring their own stories and finding compassion and understanding amid the sorrows of suicide. Her personal experience, perspective, and passion for sharing her experience make her an ideal mentor and a compassionate voice for those struggling emotionally with suicide loss or dealing with someone they love battling mental illness. In this episode we discuss mental health advocacy, suicide, fear, shame and the health care system.
