Der amerikanische Musiker Jonathan Meiburg von der Band Loma findet es erstaunlich, überhaupt am Leben zu sein. Und da hat er nicht ganz Unrecht, denn aus der Perspektive des Universums betrachtet sind wir die meiste Zeit eben nicht am Leben. Und der größte Teil des Universums besteht aus Vakuum, aus Nichts. Aber wir existieren und fliegen auf einer Kugel durch den Weltraum, gerade jetzt, in diesem Moment, das ist schon abgefahren.

Darum geht es im Song „Affinity“ vom neuen Loma-Album „How Will I Live Without a Body?“. Den Großteil der Songs dafür nehmen Loma in einer ehemaligen Sargtischler-Werkstatt in Südengland auf. Und nicht nur das: als Aufnahmekabine für den Gesang nutzen sie einen Sarg.

Melancholisch und vielschichtig

„One thing she had there was a coffin that was woven from willow branches and it’s built to be biodegradable essentially. If you’re buried in it, eventually, you and the coffin will dissappear. We all got in it just to see what it was like and it was kinda nice in there. It was a nice place to do some vocal recording where you needed the microphone quite close to her mouth and didn’t want any reverberation from the room. It was really funny to get into the coffin and close the lid and then talk through it. You’d ask a question and suddenly the coffin would say something.“

Eine andere – zumindest im Moment noch – ungewöhnliche Beteilgte am neuen Loma-Album ist eine KI. Und zwar eine, die nur mit dem Werk der Performance-Künstlerin und Musikerin Laurie Anderson gefüttert worden ist. Meiburg ist ein Freund von Anderson und sie hat ihm erlaubt, ihre persönliche KI für das Album zu nutzen.

Von der KI kommt beispielsweise die Idee für den Albumtitel. „How Will I Live Without a Body?“ hört man am besten in einer ruhigen Minute und mit hochwertigen Kopfhörern. Damit kann man sich wunderbar in die vielschichtigen Songs mit ihren hypnotischen Pianoloops, dunklen Klarinettenmelodien und Streicher-Arrangements fallen lassen.
