His picture credits have been everywhere from LIFE to VOGUE and beyond. For seven decades he’s extensively photographed the city of San Francisco. He is the author of several photography books, his latest one is “Vineyards“.

ES: Today’s mentor is Fred Lyon, a professional photographer born in 1924. Fred Lyon has been a photographer since the early 1940’s. His work spans news, architecture, advertising, wine and food. His picture credits have been everywhere from LIFE to VOGUE and beyond. For seven decades he’s extensively photographed the city of San Francisco, capturing . Fred is the author of several photography books, his latest one is titled Vineyards.

ES: This is their advice.

FL: This is the best time to be taking pictures because, even the least camera that you can buy today, is so much more advanced, than I had when I started out. The cameras were, we thought, wonderful then. But they were nothing compared to what we have now. So don’t worry about, buying the most expensive camera. Though, if you’re fortunate enough to have a lot of excess cash, there’s something to be said for that photo jewelry, Leicas. But even, whatever you have, don’t worry about the camera, worry about getting yourself out there. Take lots and lots of pictures. Photograph everything, and look at it, and you’ll find that it changes your way of looking, and, really the most important piece of advice for you if you’re going to be a a photographer, is: wear comfortable shoes. The rest of it will come right along. And just, keep snapping. It’s a great deal of fun and, bring a lot of joy to it. It’s not necessary to be grim about photography.
