Is getting your goal dependent on having the right mentor? Moving the needle in you getting your goals is simpler than it seems… At least it’s simpler than I make it out to be for myself… I should be taking my own advice here… And I’m sure there will be multiple things I should heed by the end of this post… But don’t get me wrong… Relationships are important. Mentors and coaches are important. Clearly defining and establishing your goal is also important. But, it gets down to one thing… Doing One Thing! The one action step, the next step, to make progress toward your goal. Like actually completing that Facebook ads course you purchased 6 months ago… Reading that leadership book and applying its principles… (BTW, this is the best book on Leadership I’ve ever read…) Stop all the BS and… Do. Act. Execute. Never mistake motion for action – Ernest Hemmingway Because going through the motions isn’t how you accomplish goals… And that’s why knowledge isn’t your secret power… Knowledge is worthless. Unless you take action on it. So finish that book, launch that pod, and get after your goals! It begins with establishing your action plan… Which is fundamentally just breaking down your goal into smaller steps… Like the first step in running more effective Facebook ads is… Taking a course on Facebook ads. The first step in getting your book published… Is committing to writing one hundred words a day… And there’s many more steps along the way… But why is action so effective? When you create that plan… Step by step… It takes out the guess work of what’s next… Which makes taking this step that much easier… And the next step… And the next… And that is action with purpose… With direction… That’s not to say that you won’t fail… Hitting road bumps and pot holes along the way… Because you will… Tires pop. Gaskets blow. But, thank god you’re not a tree. You can change directions. You can adapt. You can pivot. And most importantly… You can try again! And if you’re still playing the game… You haven’t lost. Even better… You still have a good chance to win. Today is a new day. End today with a victory. Look at your action plan. He says that he was Beavis and Butthead back in high school… Losers… Bums… But all and all some cool friends. Hmmm…. Today though, he’s working with pro athletes, moto cross bad asses, executives, and entrepreneurs… Which is quite a long way from being demoted to floor sweeper at his dad’s business. And literally aspiring to be a garbage man… A few years ago, I came across this study on European soccer players. It was studying and tracking how many touches each player had on the ball… And how long they had it before they passed it away. If you’ve ever watched the World Cup before… You might have seen this phenomenon that the study found… Many players, most of the time, as soon as they got the ball… They passed it away. Get It Away From Me!!! When asked why the hell would you do that… You know… Instead of trying to score… They said that they would rather pass the ball to someone else than make a mistake… #YBS Like Wayne Gretzky said… “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” In addition to getting Tim’s feedback on guys who ride motorcycles… Who voluntarily fly hundreds of feet through the air as fast as they can… We talk about how Tim turned his life around to become the man and the father he is today. Why he decided to stop BSing himself… And his life… And I hope to have Tim on in the future… Because we didn’t even get into his journey to Costa Rica… Where he started a business… Sold it… And then came back to the US… Wrote his book, “Finding Your Costa Rica” All after graduating with his doctorate. I don’t know why… But shame is a part of my blind spot. Yeah… Shame… Maybe I’m ashamed because… I’m blind… And blindness… that’s one of the things my mastermind has been riding me for… Not because I’m blind… But maybe because it’s the elephant in the room… And I’m the only mother fucker ignoring it! Why should I be ashamed though? Y B S that part of me? It’s who I am… Maybe it’s guilt. I’m guilty… Let’s not BS that… Because I am. Sometimes… I feel guilty that I’m blind. I have guilt for what it’s done to my brother… My mom, my dad, and my wife. I feel the guilt… And it’s really fucking heavy. And maybe it’s so heavy because… I just feel like I can do more. I should be doing more… And I’m just not. What about you? Do you feel guilty? Ashamed? Maybe it’s fear? Yeah… I’ve got that one too. In fact, I’ve been fearful of this change on the pod for months. I knew it was coming, but I kept BSing myself. I kept coming up with reasons … These fucking excuses… To push it off… But why? Y B S? These are all parts of my blind spots… My BS. So, what’s Your Blind Spot? And… After you figure it out… Y B S? Y B S your business, your career, your family… Why BS your life? It starts with just asking the question… But, it’s really about living it. Y B S? Y B S yourself? Or anything else? I’m going to continue introducing you to incredible individuals… And I’m going to keep asking the tough questions. I’m probably going to piss a few people off in the process… But, you deserve that… I deserve that… We deserve to shed light on our blind spots… And come out from under that shit! Y B S? And I guess that’s just the cost of coming on Y B S… Interviews are awesome… I love opening people up, finding that vulnerability, and digging out those nuggets of greatness. What’s in your life right now that you don’t love? Anything you don’t like doing… Or maybe hate doing? Mentally, imagine a rain shower head above you… My brother has this amazing 4 shower head walk-in shower that’s the inspiration for this visualization… And what if as the water falls down upon you… All that stuff washed away? What if, just by simply turning a couple knobs… You could change your experience just like that? You’d probably have a lot of room, space, and time to think about and do the things you really want to do. The things that you’d probably accomplish… If that other crap wasn’t mucking it up… Like being a bestselling author… Running marathons… Or even swimming across a river… As the warm water washes away the things you don’t want… You envision being a collegiate professor … Or an artist with your work being displayed in museums, galleries, and even winning awards for it. Some of you are helping build satellites… Working with NASA… As an astrophysicist… Or, you left your job to bring your invention to market… Getting patents along the way… And now it’s being used across 4 continents! Then you reach forward… Turn the knob to the right… And you wipe the water from your eyes. Is this just a vision of grandeur? Would any one of these be impossible for you? Or is that just you choosing to limit what’s possible for you? Maybe it is… As these are accomplishments anyone would be happy to have on their resume… Let’s go a step further. What if… What if you accomplished all these things? Every single one of them… Just you. 1 woman. 1 man… When I was introduced to Josh Spodek… I was excited. Incredibly excited… Because he reminded me of the thing I learned from Dr. Jim Afremow. If you can spot greatness… Then you’ve got greatness inside of you as well. We all do. We all have greatness inside each one of us. And as Josh says… The trick to achieve it is simple. The 1 trick behind him being able to say he’s done all of the aforementioned achievements… Isn’t a trick at all. It’s simple. And it’s best represented in a single two-letter word. Do Just keep doing. Doing and pursuing what it is that you want to be great at. It can’t be that simple though… I refuse to believe it! I’ve tried and tried. Well maybe… That’s the problem. You’re just trying. You’re trying to be successful instead of just doing. If you want to publish a book… Then write. If you want to get your Doctorate in astrophysics or your Master’s in Business… (BTW Josh has both as well as multiple other degrees from Ivy League schools) Enroll. If you want to be a painter… Paint. If you want to eat better, live healthier, and lose weight… Cook. If you want to complete a marathon… Run. The limitations we put on ourselves as humans are incredibly suppressive, oppressive, and depressing. You, me, and most of us come from a place of fear… When we should just come from a place of courage. Having the courage to write that first word… The courage to go to school… (I’m doing this personally right now… Full-Time!) The courage to cook, paint, or to take that first step. When you come from courage… You arrive. You arrive at understanding… The understanding that living life isn’t about going through the motions like you’re a sleep-walking ambienized being… But that the best and only way to live life is through living it. So… Turn the knob… And wash away those words and perceptions of limitation that you’ve been told… That you’ve been sold… And that you’ve adopted as your own. You are meant for more… If you can spot greatness… You’ve got greatness inside you. And achieving it begins and ends with this. Do.
