Presenting EO DC‘s Impactful Leadership Show! A weekly podcast hosted by Gregory McDonough aimed at busting myths or common misconceptions about leadership & being an entrepreneur.
Today’s guest is a seasoned business speaker and has addressed groups in more than 30 different countries and is trusted by more than 20,000 CEOs. He is also the author of two books; Forum and the Friendship Advantage . Please welcome to the show, Mo Fathelbab! Mo is the President of Forum Resources Network, as well as the co-founder of the HBS Alumni Forums. Mo joins the host Greg McDonough to talk about what it means to truly be a leader. Takeaways: A common misconception about leadership is that you can’t be vulnerable at work. The new adage is “bring your whole self to work”. If you are putting on a front and wearing a mask, your leadership won’t be authentic and it won’t inspire others. The people that you are the closest with are the ones you can be the most honest with. It’s ok to share your emotions with those people at work and be honest with them about your feelings. As a leader, it’s ok to make a mistake. You don’t want to put on a front that you are perfect and demand perfection because then everyone will have to feel that way. Instead, focus on using mistakes as a learning opportunity and a way to grow. There are two types of people when it comes to having difficult conversations at work; those who are conflict avoiders and those who are like a bull in a china shop. You can’t just sweep your feelings under the rug because you’ll eventually burst and come across in a rude way. As a CEO, if you aren’t honest with your employees and avoid all conflict, then you aren’t doing anyone any favors. It’s important to take social cues from people such as them looking at their watch or their phone during a meeting. If this happens, there needs to be a conversation about why that person is doing that and get to the bottom of their feelings. In order to learn and grow, you want to surround yourself with people who are not like you and people who see the world differently from you. This will give you a fresh perspective on things and open your mind to other ways of thinking. Today’s guest is an award-winning global entrepreneur, worldwide motivational speaker, bestselling author, Hollywood film producer, producer of a Grammy Award-winning jazz album, and Executive Producer of an Emmy Award-winning television show. He is also the Executive Producer and Star of the groundbreaking new TV series GOING PUBLIC. Jeff Hoffman is the Chairman of the Global Entrepreneurship Network and the Managing Partner of Jeff Hoffman Advisory Services. Jeff shares why leaders need to focus on building other leaders, when entrepreneurs need to think about hiring, and what you need to do when everything’s going fine for your business. Takeaways: Being a leader is not about creating lots of followers and telling them what to do. Being a leader is really about creating other leaders. The best way to lead is to train, prepare, and develop leaders that can rise above you. Many business owners and CEOs have been trained in the task their company does and not in disciplines such as HR. For example, a former engineer running a software company. In these cases, you should hire those that are better than yourself in that area. Grow your network every day. Whenever you get the chance to talk with someone new and hear their story, assess their strengths and weaknesses. This way you’ll always have people in mind when you need to fill a position. Wearing seven hats in order to run your company “well” is going to lead to average performance. However, if you want to grow your company and scale up, you need to be looking to grow your team before you can actually afford to. Build your team in your head so that as soon as you can afford to pay someone to fill a role, you already know who you want to have in that seat. If you can’t afford a full-time person to fill a role, it’s better to hire a fractional person for that role than it is to have no one in that role. The three most dangerous words in business are, “we’re doing fine.” If you look around and you’re comfortable, you need to start thinking about what’s going to come, what are you not seeing, etc. Quote of the Show: “Real leaders don't create followers, they create other leaders.” - Jeff Hoffman Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffhoff/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/SpeakerJeff Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/speakerjeffhoffman/ Company website: https://www.jeffhoffman.com/ Global Entrepreneurship Network: https://www.genglobal.org/ Ways to Tune In: Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/b9436ea0-3e54-4c2d-a555-43e6ac890787 Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-impactful-leadership-show/id1608566236 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/39cdJjxlfGrGXreE7r8OBm Google Podcast: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZGJlYW4uY29tL2ltcGFjdGZ1bGxlYWRlcnNoaXAvZmVlZC54bWw iHeartRadio: https://iheart.com/podcast/95281596 PlayerFM: https://player.fm/series/3352055 YouTube: https://youtu.be/ySJJYhzcLuU The Impactful Leadership Show is sponsored by the DC Chapter of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization. Today’s guest served in the U.S. Army and Defense Intelligence Agency for 20 years and now teaches audiences worldwide in the art of Empathy Based Listening. Eric Maddox is an inspirational speaker, consultant, negotiation trainer, and the author of Mission: Black List No.1 . Eric shares what leadership is really all about, how to truly listen to others, and ways to avoid common listening distractions. Takeaways: Leadership is not about driving others toward your vision. True leadership is empowering others to discover their talents and using them to reach a shared vision. When building relationships as a leader, you need to listen and seek to understand what it means to be that person. Knowing that will inform whether you can work well together. When approaching a problem, it’s crucial for you to recognize what is not going to work while simultaneously not pretending to know what will work. In order to truly understand another person and learn from them, we need to clear our minds of thoughts, goals, and most importantly biases so that we can ask questions absent of biases. Through this unbiased discovery, we can get everyone on the same team. People have a serious problem with listening. We only hear and process about 25% of what someone else says. This is because the human brain cannot multitask, especially when encountering the 6 types of listening distractions. The 3 biggest Listening Distractions are 1) What to say next, 2) Our goals in a conversation, and 3) Our biases toward the individual. When you can clear your mind of distractions, you can pick up on the breadcrumbs, the one word or phrase someone wants to hear while talking with you. You should try to pick out the breadcrumb but don’t assume you know what it is, let yourself discover more about it. Today’s guest has spoken to audiences on every inhabited continent over the past 15 years. He has worked with the US Air Force, the Australian government, and Fortune 500 companies such as Microsoft, AT&T, United Health Group, Fannie Mae, and State Farm Insurance. Prior to becoming a Certified Speaking Professional, he was a leadership professor and stand-up comedian. In between presentations, he competes in ultramarathons and Ironman triathlons. He is the author of four books, Pink Goldfish, The Four Factors of Effective Leadership, The Freak Factor, and The Freak Factor for Kids. Dave Rendall is the Keynote Speaker and MC at The Freak Factory. Dave shares the trap leaders put themselves in by thinking they can change people, why you need to lean into your best traits, and some great tips on parenting as an entrepreneur. Takeaways: Leadership is not about turning someone into something they aren’t. In reality, most people don’t change that much, even when desperate. You can’t teach someone to be passionate about something and want to do it. Leadership is really about understanding who a person is, what they are, and what roles and responsibilities you can help them find that will maximize their effectiveness. To gain a deeper understanding of your employees, first, have conversations with them about what they like and don’t like. Second, pay attention to the nuances of how they work in different situations as this can provide a more accurate account of themselves. Learn how you interact with others by taking personal assessments such as Kolbe, DISC, Myers-Briggs (MBTI), Strengthsfinder, and Enneagram. These will also highlight areas where you need to be conscientious and self-aware when working with a team. Just because your child does things differently than you does not mean that they are doing it wrong or that you need to force them to do it their way. As entrepreneurs, you should be the most thrilled to see your child innovating and iterating their life. If you keep hearing that you are “too” this or that, it probably means that you’re in the wrong spot. Find an opportunity that allows you to tap into who you really are and what you already do naturally. Quote of the Show: “Most of leadership is about understanding who people are, working with what they are, not trying to turn them into something else, and trying to help them find situations that maximize their effectiveness.” - Dave Rendall Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daverendall/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/daverendall Company website: https://www.drendall.com/ The Freak Factor: https://www.amazon.com/Freak-Factor-Discovering-Uniqueness-Flaunting/dp/1599326698/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454991891&sr=8-1&keywords=the+freak+factor The Freak Factor for Kids: https://www.amazon.com/Freak-Factor-Kids-Weirdest-Children/dp/1479383791/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=ZESMDDDZ1CGMHJP0XSST Pink Goldfish: https://www.amazon.com/Pink-Goldfish-2-0-Exploit-Imperfection/dp/1952234115 The Four Factors of Effective Leadership: https://www.amazon.com/Four-Factors-Effective-Leadership-Revised/dp/1419636642 Ways to Tune In: Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/b9436ea0-3e54-4c2d-a555-43e6ac890787 Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-impactful-leadership-show/id1608566236 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/39cdJjxlfGrGXreE7r8OBm Google Podcast: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZGJlYW4uY29tL2ltcGFjdGZ1bGxlYWRlcnNoaXAvZmVlZC54bWw iHeartRadio: https://iheart.com/podcast/95281596 PlayerFM: https://player.fm/series/3352055 YouTube: https://youtu.be/ZUNeU5s-Flg The Impactful Leadership Show is sponsored by the DC Chapter of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization. This amazing entrepreneur is a writer, video instructor, speaker, and Forbes contributor. Megan Bruneau is the author of How To Be Alone (and Together) , the Host of The Failure Factor: Stories of Career Perseverance , and Therapist & Executive Coach at Megan Bruneau, LLC. Megan shares what it really means to be a compassionate leader, how to balance expectations with support, and the tradeoffs entrepreneurs during the hiring process. Takeaways: Being a compassionate leader does not mean that you have to abandon having expectations or act overly sympathetic and empathetic to the extent that you’ll accept anything. Leaders need to fix their relationships with themselves. While they may think that being extremely self-critical is how to grow, it actually keeps them paralyzed because they are fixated on their flaws and unable to take the risk they need to in order to grow. Effective, compassionate leaders balance high, yet flexible, expectations for their team with a high level of support they provide to them. Authoritarian leaders hold extremely high expectations but provide little to no support to their team members. Make sure there is room in your company’s culture for imperfection. This enables your team to make mistakes, take risks, be more willing to grow, and be more accountable for their actions. This is because they are not driven by the fear of losing their jobs. When setting expectations, a lot of the initial vision is lost in translation from the leader to the team. That’s why it’s vital to ensure expectations are clear, realistic, agreed upon by all, and that there is a way to check in on them. As entrepreneurs, part of the tradeoff you need to make when delegating something to your team is that they may not be able to do that task exactly the same or as well as could. Don’t get trapped by perfectionism, move on to solving bigger problems. If an issue arises with a client, you need to communicate with them and explain what the problem is and what you’re doing to fix it. Without hearing the real story from you, your client will make up reality in their head, which leads to bigger problems. Today’s guest is a Certified EOS implementer that is working to make a profound, positive, rippling impact on leaders and teams.Beth Berman is a Certified EOS implementer, speaker, facilitator, coach with EOS Worldwide, and Partner & Peer Group Leader at Clark Leadership. Hear Beth dismantle some huge leadership misconceptions including the value of putting up your core values somewhere visible, leaders can make unaccountable people become accountable, and that company scorecards kill the culture. Takeaways: The act of simply putting your core values somewhere that your employees can see is not going to make them live and breathe those values, it’s not going to impact your company’s culture, and it’s not going to create change. For your core values to actually make an impact in your company, they need to be authentic and then integrated into the daily conversation. The leaders of your company need to live the core values and recognize other people that are a part of that culture. Build a culture of appreciation that regularly uses shout outs to highlight the accomplishments and behaviors of team members that are living the core values. A leader cannot make some be more accountable, that person must want to become more accountable themselves. Accountability is driven by a combination of leadership and management. Delegation is hard for a lot of leaders because they know they can do something better than the person they’re assigning it to at first. However, in order to grow your company, entrepreneurs need to “let go of the vine” and trust their team. Have a regularly scheduled clarity break to allow you to get all of your thoughts down and decompress without any distractions. Try doing this with a pen and paper to avoid the distractions provided by technology. The Entrepreneurial Operating System, (EOS) is a simple but not easy set of tools combined in an integrated system to help business leaders with Vision, Traction, and Healthy. It seems as though as long as sports have existed, people have drawn comparisons between what happens on the gridiron, pitch, rink, courts, etc., and the world of business. Get ready to learn from a speaker, coach, and author that has a more-informed opinion than most when making these types of observations. Having spent 15+ years working with the highest-performing basketball players and also becoming an IES 2022 Speaker of the Year Finalist this guest is a priceless resource for anyone interested in growing as a leader. Alan Stein Jr. is the author of Raise Your Game and Sustain Your Game, Host of the Raise Your Game podcast, and a speaker, coach, and consultant. In this profound episode, Alan discusses how to choose to be a leader on your team, why leaders need to know when to be followers, and how to recognize the signifiers of a high-performing organization. Takeaways: Leadership is simply a choice. You don’t need an official position of authority to be a leader. No matter where you are in your company’s organizational chart, you can make a choice to be an impactful and influential leader. Leaders don’t have to have all of the answers for every issue they and their teams may encounter. Honest leaders shouldn’t mind sharing some of their vulnerabilities with the members of their team as they find they don’t have the answer but work to find it. By admitting that you don’t know an answer, you’re sharing your humility and vulnerability which actually helps you connect more deeply with the individuals on your team and your other followers. Simply having authority does not make you a leader. “Leadership is the desire to have an influence or an impact over somebody's behavior.” Leaders use their vision to help others reach goals they might not be able to imagine themselves reaching on their own. In basketball, if the only leader on the team was the head coach, which is a position of authority, then that team would severely underperform. Looking beyond sports, in high-performing teams, every member feels a sense of ownership and leadership. In order to be an effective leader, you have to know when to follow and allow other members of the team to take point. Effective leaders have the confidence and humility to recognize the great wisdom and experience of those around them. If your voice is the only voice that your team hears, your voice can become numb and lose its impact on your team because they will tune that voice out, regardless of message, tonality, and emotion. Today’s guest is a rock and roll roadie turned entrepreneur that has now spoken in 40 countries on six continents. Rich Mullholland is the Founder of Missing Link, Co-Founder of Talk Drawer, Co-Owner of Human Writes, and Author of three books, the latest of which is Here Be Dragons . Rich discusses why leaders need to use their voices to lead, why strategic destinations are more important than strategies, and how to use a 36-month calendar to plan the future of your business. Takeaways: While leaders do need to listen to many diverse opinions, they also need to lead with their voices. The difference between a leader and a manager is their ability to communicate. A leader’s job is more than simply aggregating the opinions of others. If you want to be a great leader, you need to take all of the lessons and experiences that you have filled your head with and share that learning with those around you. Don’t just make yourself smarter, make your team smarter. You need to share your vision with your team at least once a month to keep them updated with your thoughts and ideas. A good practice is to have a regular cadence of meeting weekly or bi-weekly for an “Ask Me Anything” with the team. If you aren’t communicating your vision, you’re not leading, you’re managing. Don’t set a strategy for your business, set a strategic destination. A strategy tells people what to do and how to do it, whereas, a strategic destination tells autonomous, intelligent individuals where they have to be by a certain date. Strategic destination and victory condition are synonyms. They both outline the conditions that must be satisfied to consider an effort a success. A change to the victory conditions results in changes to the approach of how to satisfy that condition. If you have your own business, don’t measure the business with a 12-month year. Instead, look at the business through the broader lens of a 36-month year. This longer timeframe gives you more breathing room A financial milestone is not a victory condition. Nothing will cripple your business more than a financial target. The financial target should never be the goal, it should always be the reward for reaching the goal. The target is met because other goals were achieved. Quote of the Show: “After you listen, you have to lead loud. Justin details why entrepreneurs should not hire entrepreneurs, how to fix cultural issues by fixing an organization’s design, and why salespeople should not be managing accounts and other non-sales activities. Takeaways: When entrepreneurs hire employees that are also entrepreneurial it causes two huge problems. The first problem is the creation of an unpleasant work environment for your team. The second is this can make your company an incubator for future competitors. An organization’s culture is not something that can be directly managed and controlled. Culture is something that emerges from the very fabric of an organization as a consequence of the design of that organization. Rather than directly tampering with the culture of an organization, when a cultural problem is identified, it should be recognized as a symptom of poor organizational design. To fix these issues, focus on the organization’s design and not culture change. To fix its design, recognize what an organization is meant to do. Small organizations are meant to grow and larger organizations are meant to spin off free cash flow. If an organization is doing either of these, it becomes a healthy organization with a healthy culture. A very common mistake is the failure to recognize a requirement for line management. This stems from a failure to recognize that the role of a line manager should be to enable an individual contributor to focus on their work, undistracted by everything around them. As companies scale, they need to build out their management from the bottom up, instead of from the top down. Start with hiring line managers. You need to clearly specify the roles of your managers, without this line managers become less effective. The goal of line managers is not to make sure everyone is busy all the time. The line manager is responsible for choking the release of work to maximize throughput, rather than efficiency. This allows individual contributors to be more responsive during sprints. Quote of the Show: “Smart managers should be clamoring to get their organization to the size where they can add line management.” - Justin Roff-Marsh Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/justinroffmarsh/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/justinroffmarsh Ballistix Website: https://ballistix.com/ Sales Process Engineering Blog: https://salesprocessengineering.net/ Personal Website: https://justinroffmarsh.com/ The Machine : https://a.co/d/iWK3Lfl Ways to Tune In: Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/b9436ea0-3e54-4c2d-a555-43e6ac890787 Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-impactful-leadership-show/id1608566236 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/39cdJjxlfGrGXreE7r8OBm Google Podcast: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZGJlYW4uY29tL2ltcGFjdGZ1bGxlYWRlcnNoaXAvZmVlZC54bWw iHeartRadio: https://iheart.com/podcast/95281596 PlayerFM: https://player.fm/series/3352055 YouTube: https://youtu.be/Tq4sXsPvY7Q The Impactful Leadership Show is sponsored by the DC Chapter of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization. Today’s guest is a top-rated speaker, trainer, coach, and entrepreneur that launched his first successful business at 15 and he’s been hooked on building businesses ever since. Matt Granados is the author of Motivate the Unmotivated , CEO of LifePulse, Inc., and the Host of the Best People: Best Place Podcast. Matt shares how to recognize and get in front of burnout, how to help your employees bridge the gap between them and the company, and how managers can monitor their team’s Personnel Performance Gaps to reach their goals. Takeaways: Managing others does not mean babysitting people and doing the job for them. Managing and leading others mean that you help others to do their job. A big part of managing comes down to removing roadblocks so your team can do its job. There is a growing gap between the wants of a company and the lifestyles the employees of that company desire. The best way to bridge the gap is by empowering employees and equipping them with the right tools to make it back over the gap. A Personnel Performance Gap (PPG) is the sum total of all of the personal performance gaps from each member of your team. If you aren’t tracking and managing your team’s PPG, that gap will cause a “pothole” which will throw your team off its tracks. The job of managers is not to fix the problems that cause the gaps in an individual’s performance, rather it is to listen, understand what is going on, and provide them with the tools and systems they need to solve the problem themselves. Monitoring a team’s PPG allows managers to find the root cause of a problem and then apply the appropriate solution to solve it. When discussing projects and new ideas, managers need to have a deadline in mind so that their employees can prioritize appropriately without getting overwhelmed. When decisions need to be made and the outcome isn’t important to the manager, they need to empower their employees to make that decision themselves without involving the manager. Today’s guest is a passionate entrepreneur, speaker, facilitator, and father. He is also a member and former Chapter President of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization whose entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 8 when he started working in the family business at their campground. Dan Lionello is the Founder & Facilitator of Painted Picture and the CEO & Founder at Omnae.com. Dan crushes the misconception behind leaders’ superhero complexes, shares how to overcome the imposter syndrome, and discusses the three roles of an entrepreneur. Takeaways: Entrepreneurs have three roles, the employee, the leader and visionary, and the owner. In order to grow their companies, they must figure out ways to wear the hats of all three roles while keeping the company on the right course. The employee’s role is to do the work and create value. The role of the leader and visionary is to learn, delegate, and determine strategy. The role of the owner is about growing the value of the asset to create the highest possible value for shareholders. When entrepreneurs “buy themselves a job” where they are deeply “in” the business and need to perform at an operational level to generate revenue, they decrease their ability to take up the role of owner and increase the asset’s value. When you put your ego aside and have real conversations about how you feel about your role, you can gain a better awareness and larger perspective of what needs to happen in order for the company to grow. Many entrepreneurs begin as technicians and accidentally become a salesperson when they sell to a client for their first job. The next evolution comes when they have generated demand and need to build out a team. There is always another challenge and learning opportunity around the corner and you need to embrace that as part of the entrepreneurial journey. It’s rarely a straight line to success, you’ll make mistakes along the way but that’s just part of the adventure. To optimize your own growth and learning, become intentional about what and how you are learning. Look to the future and ask yourself what you’ll need to know then, so you can start your learning process now. Today’s get is one of the most profound keynote speakers on strategic communication and leadership that has delivered over 1,000 keynotes in 33 countries. Ryan Avery is the Keynote Speaker. Ryan is also an Emmy-award-winning journalist and author of two best-selling books, Speaker, Leader, Champion and Motivating Millennials . Ryan shares the difference between a leader and the leader, what the two types of leadership are, and the difference between managing and motivating your team. Takeaways: You need to know what your definition of leadership is. For example, Ryan’s definition of a leader is anyone that influences someone. You don't have to wait to get a title or position to become a leader, everyone can be a leader and influence others. There are two styles of leadership, the first is Command & Control which is an outdated model with poor results. The second is Direct and Drive, which means that leaders point people in the right direction and make sure the machine is driving in that direction. Through Direct and Drive leadership, people are excited to follow the leader’s energy and it’s much easier to motivate people than with Command and Control. There is a difference between being a leader and being the leader. A leader manages people, whereas the leader motivates people. People don’t come to work wanting to be managed, they want to be motivated. Leaders need to know what motivates people. It’s important for leaders to understand that what motivated someone yesterday with motivate them today. People have so much going on in their lives every day that their motivations change and leaders need to recognize that. The best way to discover what will motivate someone on your team is to ask them. You don’t have the know the answer, you have to find the answer and the best way to do that is to go to the source and ask. Resting and relaxing are crucial components of being able to recharge your capacity for work. Not everyone relaxes the same way and relaxation doesn’t need to be a week without cell reception. Find what types of rest work for you. Today’s guest is a social entrepreneur, life coach, and lifelong learner. They have over 20 years of experience as a leader in construction management. Wamiq Hamid is the Vice President at DMY Engineering Consultants Inc. Wamiq shares how the view of leadership can evolve ad someone matures, how to approach the lofty responsibilities of leadership positions, and why partnerships can be a great way to reach your vision. Takeaways: Early on in your career, it’s easy to equate someone with a lofty title with someone that is a great leader. In that same train of thought, you don’t need to have a title in order to be a leader. Providing your team with great leadership is not easy and it can take a while for business leaders to realize that. As your business grows, you can’t only think about money, you need to think about the people on your team. While leadership positions may come with a few perks, the important part is the responsibility that comes with those roles. Developing your team members into leaders requires you to have a firm belief in yourself and the vision you are setting out to achieve. You also must trust your team members and give them room to make their own mistakes. Partnerships are complicated, but if you have a big vision, you can go farther with a team than you can by yourself. The four stages of team development are Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. The process is not always smooth, but completing it can bear bountiful fruits. When working with partners, everyone will come with their own ideas and it’s ok if you don’t always agree on everything. However, when it’s time to make the final decision, you need to make sure that everyone is aligned. Today’s guests are world-renowned speakers, authors, and some of the foremost leaders in the DEA. Steve Murphy & Javier Peña were the lead investigators targeting Pablo Escobar and the authors of Manhunters - How We Took Down Pablo Escobar . Steve and Javier shared how to become a great leader for your team, why you don’t need to toot your own horn, and why listening is a critical component of leadership. Takeaways: When someone gets promoted, they often think they are more important than other employees. While they do have more responsibilities in their leadership role, they are no more or less important than anyone else in the organization. As a leader, you need to recognize that you’re in a position where you can help your people succeed and that their success leads to your success. When someone new is put into a leadership role, there is an incorrect assumption that because they are in charge they know everything. Leaders need to consider how to properly show their gratitude to the people working around them in ways that they will really appreciate. In some cases, this could be as simple as talking to someone about the job they did and genuinely thanking them. If you are trying to make a decision, talk to the frontline employees that are involved in the execution of it. You will gain a better perspective and they will feel valued Before you can begin leading, you need to listen. You and your team are working toward a common goal and you can’t achieve your goal if everyone does not understand what that goal is first. Listening is a crucial part of communicating as a leader. A transparent workplace without secrets alleviates the pressure from clashing egos, reduces the duplication of effort, and allows people to do their job without micromanagement because of the trust and respect that gets built. Today’s guest is an entrepreneur of 25+ years and a longtime member and past President of EO DC. He is also a commercial pilot with over 14,000 flight hours in more than 30 types of aircraft. Pramod Raheja is the CEO & Co-Founder of Airgility, Inc. Pramod shares why you need to build up your leadership skills, how to get the most from professional networks, and whether you should execute your idea or seek funding for it first. Takeaways: As you build your team, you won’t be a great leader just because you founded the company, you need to spend a significant amount of time honing your leadership skills. It takes intentional effort to learn how to be a great leader. There are so many great resources for leaders to learn from on the internet, but what provides the most impact is connecting with other Founder CEOs and taking part in experience shares. There are lots of professional networks available for new entrepreneurs to join in order to meet fellow entrepreneurs and grow their peer network. As the relationships with other members grow, people share deeper experiences and greater knowledge. If you have a great culture, that can be what set you apart for potential employees when competing in the hiring process with larger companies that can offer more attractive compensation packages. Raising capital is hard but you need to be able to take objections well, learn from them, and keep moving. Handling the rejection is made easier when you truly believe in what you’re doing. Avoid waiting until you have funding to start executing on your idea. It’s much more effective if you build a prototype that you can use with test customers to prove the demand and product market fit and then look for financing. Early on, it can be very helpful to hire lots of freelancers for help on certain projects, however, they should not be your answer to everything because there are definitely some roles that you should keep in-house.
