This week Sid talks to one of the biggest and brightest stars in country music – Lainey Wilson. Back in May, he drove up to Nashville and got to have this conversation in person at Lainey’s farmhouse outside of town. The occasion was a Southern Living cover shoot, and Lainey and Sid sat down on a pair of comfortable chairs in her speakeasy-style basement, which is where she writes a lot of her songs. Lainey couldn’t have been more welcoming as a host, even though she’d been touring nonstop for her latest album, Whirlwind . She’s also hosting the CMA Awards in mid-November, and she’s appearing in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel Reminders of Him early next year. But Lainey has clearly not forgotten her small-town roots in Baskin, Louisiana, or the importance of good friends, family, and her faith. She talked a lot about how she stays grounded, how she keeps holding on despite a wild few years in Nashville, and the importance of keeping her people close. She also told some funny stories about her fiance, Devlin Hodges, who goes by Duck, and how she and her family celebrate Thanksgiving. In this episode of WO50: Women Over 50 Inbody Wisdom & Wellness, we explore the everyday rituals that shape our lives. From the quiet comfort of morning coffee or tea to the winding down of an evening routine, we discuss the difference between habits and rituals—and how adding a sense of ceremony can bring presence, meaning, and mindfulness to even the simplest moments. When life runs on autopilot, joy slips away. True ritual calls us into the now, reconnecting us with ourselves and with everything around us. After all, nothing is special—unless we make it special. Join us as we reflect on the power of ritual to anchor us in presence, nurture connection, and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Today we chat with Ellen Britton who is a beautiful wise woman, a well known singer-songwriter, guitarist to many of the stars in Nashville and also in our humble opinion, the best guitar teacher around! This a lively and enlightening conversation where we cover many topics. Ellen thinks that being on the planet for 70 years gives her insights but we argue that she always has been a wise, talented, patient and overall special human being. Ellen shares her unique perspective that her role as a teacher is to be sensitive to the vulnerability of learning. Her goal is to share the truth in a helpful way. Truth and kindness are her philosophy. As a guitar teacher, she is patient and encouraging and offers lessons at all levels of players. She is positive but not in a condescending way. She feels that part of her role is to re-balance the natural insecurity that happens in the learning process. We learn best when we are relaxed and at ease and so to create a positive feeling to help her students feel more open is a big part of Ellen’s approach. A good life philosophy is to see what is working in life, rather then what is not working and to support rather than push down. Just because you think or believe something, doesn’t make it so. There is an inner critic that is talking inside the head and so Ellen feels her approach is to be the opposite. ELLEN BRITTON is a veteran musician with decades of performing, writing, recording, and teaching experience. Touring with Martina McBride, Pam Tillis, Jo Dee Messina, Sara Evans, Lari White, Maura O’Connell, Tanya Tucker, and appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The View, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, and The Today Show, Ellen is the quintessential Nashville musician. Moreover she is a thoughtful and smart woman making her a wise women who’s voice can only serve us in the most positive way. Jana opens up about the profound experience of being with her mother during her final months. She shares the challenges, the healing, and the transformation that unfolded between herself and her vibrant, complex mother. Despite having many reasons to feel anger, Jana discovered that loving her mother was ultimately easier and more healing than holding onto resentment. Jana discusses the powerful role that Internal Family Systems (IFS)/Parts Work has played in her journey. She reflects on the dysfunction and abuse she endured as a child, her mother’s inability to care for her, and the unique pain of having a mother who was seen as a ‘guru’ by many, yet struggled deeply in her role as a parent. Through exploring her family history and lineage, Jana has gained a deeper understanding of both her mother and herself. The conversation also touches on: *The importance of intuition and learning to trust your own voice *The fear of being seen and heard *How singing lessons have become a part of Jana’s healing process *The joy and connection she felt as her voice began to open, sensing her mother’s happiness in that moment This episode is a heartfelt exploration of healing, self-discovery, and the courage it takes to break cycles and reclaim your voice. You may not have control over everything in your life, but you always have control over what you focus on and what you choose to believe. Your perspective is uniquely yours. When you realize that everyone has a different point of view—a different seat in the stadium—you naturally become softer and less controlling. In our culture, we’re addicted to comfort. This means our “discomfort muscle” isn’t always strong. When you find yourself in uncomfortable situations, ask: What do I know for sure? You’ll discover that, in truth, we don’t know much for certain—except for this present moment. Often, the things we worry about or plan to do never actually happen. Many people ask, “Why is this happening to me?” Try shifting your mindset to: Life isn’t happening to me, it’s happening for me. There’s a saying:: What you focus on grows. I also like:: What you focus on comes into focus. And remember: The harder you grip, the more you slip. It’s not just about seeing the positive or the glass half full. It’s about clarity—seeing things exactly as they are, and recognizing what is alive and true right now. Everything Old is New Again. There is nothing new under the sun as we kind of keep recycling information over and over. Yet it does seem to be brand new because it comes through different vessels and is heard by new ears. Kind of like a fresh coat of paint on some old paint, it just freshens it right back up. What goes around, comes around. You could have twenty different books saying, “be here now,” in twenty different ways. We are constantly processing the world around us. We can’t sit on anyone else’s perch. We understand and hear the same things with new ears at different times in our lives. The Spiritual Classic Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. Boxing yourself and others in with labels as they can dehumanize us . While some labels are necessary on products but they are not helpful when used on people. When we lump people into a group, there can be no connection and then there is no compassion or empathy which diminishes the humanity. Even when we define ourselves, it can put a box around and stifle who we are. Blanket statements don’t work and only limit our view. When you understand somebody’s story and the root of their pain, you have compassion and unconditional love for them. Act as if you know the root of everyone’s pain…because you do. Can you be okay with not having the answers? We try to explain so many things in life, and so much of it is just a bunch of bull-crap! Are you comfortable with silence? When we are still, we can feel into what is happening rather than talking about or explaining it. Opening to the mystery of life, the deepening. Talking about poop is often considered taboo in our culture, but it’s time we normalize this conversation! Our diverse styles of poop are like nature's colorful palette, with each hue and shape telling a unique story about your health and what’s brewing in your gut. Your poo can serve as an indicator light, revealing what’s going on in your body. We have two brains: one in our head and another in our gut. There are many neurotransmitters in the gut, and 70% of your immune system resides in your belly. When your inner plumbing isn’t regular, you may feel unwell, and toxins can re-enter your system instead of being eliminated. Psyllium is a great way to get things moving for some people, along with eating fruit peels and high-fiber foods. Remember, every poo is like a snowflake—none of them are the same! Changing the narrative as we age is what our podcast is all about. Our bodies and our mind does change as we get older. When we resist where we are at in life, it can cause suffering. We desire comfort so much because aging is a very mysterious process. To sit or be with discomfort, sadness or jealousy, we can more easily allow these challenging feelings to move through us rather then sticking to us. We can’t ever really know how someone else is feeling. Allowing someone to be in their own pain can be a grace. Eddi says she can now understand how older people are drawn to cruising as you don’t have to move your hotel as you travel around and see many different places. So this is a way that Eddi is embracing her aging, changing world. We are not trying to speed nor are we resigned in our specific age, but more so to just being okay and open to where we are at now. Welcoming the changes with a tenderness for yourself. Enjoying where you are at, with every stage of your life is a beautiful thing. *Nothing is a problem unless we call it a problem. *Maya Angelou's quote is: "What you're supposed to do when you don't like a thing is change it. Aristotle said that getting to know yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. Anything in life is either growing or dying. It's part of the natural cycle of life. But what does this have to do with your own life? We naturally want to eat more rooted winter vegetables as it grows colder and do more hibernating-type things. It's almost like an inward movement, the cooler weather as we wear warmer clothing and it gets dark earlier. It's a time for less doing and maybe more introspection. When we get to midlife, sometimes we question whether we know ourselves anymore. So going inward in the winter months can be a good time to reassess. It's never too late to know yourself or reacquaint yourself with where you are now. Food is a form of healthcare. Today Dr. Eddi shares the hidden sugars in many of our foods and discusses how sugar creates acidity and causes inflammation. We also share healthy alternates for the sweet tooth in us all. The reason why we love the bun that comes with a take out burger is because it is loaded with sugar. If you cannot pronounce many of the ingredients on a package, your body probably probably doesn’t understand it either. Can you switch to natural sodas? Make small changes consistently and soon you’ll be off sugar! Here is a list of healthy sweetener and sugar choices that do not spike your blood sugar: Stevia, Monkfruit, Inulin, Erythritol. Costco has a great blend of monk fruit and erythritol that is excellent and looks and tastes just like sugar and great to cook with. This is the list of unhealthy sweeteners you want to avoid: Aspartame, Sucralose/Splenda, Saccharin, high fructose corn syrup. What lies beyond the ego? It’s awareness and oneness, present moment and love. Ego is what allows us to experience life as a seemingly separation person. The identification to the ego is what causes problems and the attachments to things outside of ourselves. Needing validation is part of the ego. As we know ourselves, we grow ourselves. As we grow older we can either become more identified with our roles and jobs and money or less identified. Eddi finds herself softening into her life and into her authentic self. When we know better, we do better. When you are laughing, when you look into another’s eyes, when you are doing something you love, you are present and your mind is not wondering. We do body detoxing, so how about an emotional detox? When and how long do you vent with your friends and how do you move on? When does it become toxic? Have you ever had a stressful day and have not been able to use the tools you have read about? Eddi has one of those days, a day where she has had to use her tools. Sometimes we have the books on the shelves, some of which we have read and some not. We have heard the podcasts and the common buzzwords like Living in the Moment, The Present Moment is a Gift, Don’t React but Respond. But when you are having a stressful busy day, and every person in your life and your animals need you, how can you use your tools! See the Job, Do the Job, Stay Out of Misery is one of Corrine’s favorite sayings that works for almost everything. It’s the resistance to what is happening that can add on to life’s daily stress that can make it overwhelming. Allow and having an openness to what is happening can be so helpful. Your body is always in the now but your mind has a time machine. So sight, sound, touch, taste and smell and your breath are your anchor into the now.
