Greetings Leaders.

The pressures and opportunities in life and career often force us to rush ahead without understanding who we are and why we were born.

Discovering our purpose in life eludes us because of the many activities demanding our attention.

In God's eyes, King David takes the first step in becoming a leader. "God testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.' Acts 13:22

King David began his career as a shepherd of a few sheep. He begins a relationship with his God during these times alone in the sheep fields.

His "relationship first" is the key to all his accomplishments and forty-year reign as the king of Israel. He is considered the greatest king in the nation's history.

David prepared and waited years before being crowned king.

His life exemplifies patience while he waits, running for his life from the current king but refusing to rush ahead of God's timing. His faith and willingness to trust in the wisdom of God's perfect timing grow.

He is a writer, and in Psalm 31:15, He writes, "My times are in Your hand; Deliver me from the hand of my enemies, And from those who persecute me." The "times" spoken of refer to the various events that come into our lives, whether we see them as good or bad.

David must trust in God and believe his times are in His hands. A few insights from his life: God develops a leader progressively over time, gradually increasing their influence. He makes the leader along the way, building character and perseverance.

In the case of David, God empowered him to accomplish each task as he came to it. In the process, David starts the adventure of a lifetime in knowing God and relying upon His strength to achieve with excellence the opportunities ahead.

David defeated Goliath, an experience giant warrior, when the time came for him to do so. He could evade King Saul, his predecessor who relentlessly sought to kill him, forcing him to hide in caves while waiting and being hunted. He was able to take his place as king when Saul was defeated.

What are three insights from King David's life and career?

1. David focused on his relationship with God as being his essential need.
2. David relied on God's love, guidance, wisdom, strength, help, and knowledge.
3. David's success came from the overflow of his relationship with God.

David pointed to God as his shepherd and learned to lead people from his experience with God.

He writes in Psalm 23;

1 The Lord is my shepherd;

I have all that I need.

2 He lets me rest in green meadows;

he leads me beside peaceful streams.

3 He renews my strength.

He guides me along the right paths,

bringing honor to his name.

As we contemplate our journey in life and career, what adventure could match a relationship with the God of David, who calls all to come to Him?

Victory!
