NC 18: Wisdom Sequestered from an Ancient Landscape - Peter Andrews OAM
Manage episode 431332382 series 3538827
What an honour to sit with such an Elder in Peter Andrews OAM. I was joined with my sister Danielle and her partner Charles Body to have a beautiful conversation with Peter. I’m reminded of a quote I read from Caitlyn Johnson “Whomever controls the narrative controls the people” and the understanding of this is so pertinent when cracking open “popular” agendas. This chat with Peter is a perfect example of cracking the narrative and introducing, at the very least, a conversation that entertains possibilities beyond current agendas.
We delve into the incredible uniqueness of the continent of Australia. A continent that, in Peters eyes, holds the blueprint of how to create an incredible harmonious and fertile land, beyond what was there prior to humanity arriving. We touch on the impact of the flora and fauna with the use of fire, clearing and farming techniques imposed on what was a balanced, climate perfect ecosystem. Peter takes us through simple, yet powerful insight into the heating of the land, how water has been managed and sequestered dysfunctionally; that the gum tree is a sign of poor soil and ways to move water and nutrients throughout the environment. Peter also discusses how he witnessed the impact of a biodiverse pasture creating 5 champion racehorses and terminally sick cattle returning to optimised health.
All this wisdom has been gleaned from the greatest experiment and successful demonstration being the Australian continent. For decades, Peter has been bringing these insights forward and I can hear the frustration he has with the falling on conveniently deaf ears at the bureaucratic level. For me, I see that dynamic change occurs from the groundswell of critical thinking at an individual level, and Peter still has hopes that the political stage and scientific establishment need to be the way forward. This is more than a theory for Peter with a lifetime of evidence through application of this wisdom in many farms and rural holdings.
As a lot of us have developed a healthy critical thinking barometer of popular narratives, this is a conversation that invites you to also delve deeper into our stewardship of this amazing earth.
