Relationship Communication Framework:

Talker steps (sharer of feelings):

1- How have they gotten better at the behavior that upset you?

"I want to begin by thanking you for...."

2-How were they possibly innocent because other factors influenced their behavior, such as their upbringing and circumstances?

"And I want to acknowledge that..."

3- What did you do that may have influenced their hurtful behavior? How is your reaction intensified from wounds or values in your past?

"I also want to acknowledge that..."

4- Express your complaint without "you" or "always/never," along with your core needs.

"There's been a pattern of __________ and it's made me feel __________ and it taps into my core need for __________."

Listener steps:

1- Summarize their complaint to ensure you heard it correctly. "So, what I hear you saying is __________." (50% rule)

2- Take ownership of the part you're owning without excuses starting with "I know that l've had a tendency to...."

3- Make an empathy statement on how the part you're owning probably made them feel.

"I can see how my tendency to __________ would make you feel __________."

4- Make a sincere apology on the part you're owning. "I'm really sorry that my tendency to __________has made you feel __________."

5- Make amends by offering something that could make the other person feel better and ask for their feedback. "Moving forward, how about I__________? What else would you prefer?"
