In this limited run segment I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode we are featuring MARRS. MAARS was a collaborative music project started in the late 1980’s; it was an acronym representing the first letter of each artist name; Martyn Young, Alex Ayuli, Rudy Tambala, Russell Smith and Steven Young. Each member was from a different band. In 1987 the group released Pump Up The Volume. Here is a listen to it now. Pump Up The Volume, became a huge hit. It topped the charts in the UK and reached the top ten in other countries. What makes this song so unique is it samples hip hop, house, and acid house. This was an early example of what is known now as “big beat. Which influenced the development of EDM. MAARS disbanded after they released their second hit and each member went back to their original bands. That’s it for this week's Vinyl’s from the past. Now let’s get back to more music. The remarkable singer and songwriter from Romania is known for her mix of EDM into a pop sound. In the last couple of years, Minelli has been earning widespread recognition in Romania. Among her accolades is the "Best New Artist" award at the 2019 Media Music Awards.
