You won't make it!" This was one of the first things I was told as a young probationary correctional officer. It was followed by, "Why is a cute little gal like you working in a place like this!" If those statements were intended to discourage me, they didn't. They ignited unyielding determination to succeed and to help develop others throughout my career. Upon advancing to serve as a Chief Executive Officer (Warden), the questions continued, such as, "What should we call you?" Making it a teachable moment, my response was, "What did you call the guy before me?" Warden they said, I responded, that works!" Equipping those whom I have the privilege to lead has always been my priority. Why? Because our teams deserve it. Leadership is adding value to people even amid instances where staff resist growth. It requires shifting the growth trap of "We've always done it this way!" Without it, the costs are high and the consequences are dire and unforgiving. It shows up in poor production, lower performance outcomes, absenteism, high turnover and litigation. As a Leadership Expert, I can help you build your team and solve issues that derail targeted goals. I'm ready to utilize my expertise, as a leader who started at the entry level and grew to be one of the most respected Chief Executive Officers within the organization. Equipping others to lead and those who are experienced to lead more effectively is one of the primary services that we deliver. I am a gifted, strong and passionate Speaker. I have served as a Keynote Speaker for a wide spectrum of organizations to include, but not limited to Brenau University, Cooper Lighting, Scouts of America, and Women Source, to name a few. Some of my accomplishments include: Development of the first and most unique twelve month MASTER'S Leadership Training Program of its kind; Implementation of: Peer 2 Peer Mentoring Program at two Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities, of the Management Negotiation Team at four Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities and the North Central Region, Labor Management Relations Coach collateral assignment, Search Evidence Recovery Team, and revamping of the Staff Mentoring Program, to name a few revised programs under my leadership. As a subject matter expert in Labor Relations, I've provided training to newly selected and tenured managers as well as being an expert resource to other Wardens, helping them by providing solutions to labor management problems. We equip others to lead effectively. We're excited and ready to help you grow your team! Let's grow! Damion J. Cooper uses his startling life’s story of being shot an inch above the heart at point blank range by one of two gunmen to teach lessons of forgiveness, self-control, discipline, and redemption via mentorship. While mentoring a young man in prison during his years in Seminary, he discovered that his mentee was the assailant who shot him years earlier. This inspired him to create Project Pneuma; a holistic program focused on social emotional learning, forgiveness and curbing impulse actions from trauma due to Adverse Childhood Experiences in young African American males by teaching them yoga, mindfulness, breathing techniques and martial arts. Project Pneuma also partners with the Baltimore City Police Department so that the young men and new officers can build bonds of trust, respect, and cultural competencies. Damion currently serves as the Vice Chair on the Core Team of the Community Policing Committee that is directly responsible for rewriting the Baltimore Police Department’s Training Curriculum, Community Policing Plan and testifying before Judge Bredar for the federally mandated Consent Decree focusing on Police and Youth Engagement. Damion holds degrees from Coppin State University (BS, Business Management & Marketing) and the United Baptist College & Seminary (Th.M., Theology) and is a 2018 graduate of The Leadership: a program of the Greater Baltimore Committee. In this episode, Dr. George James and Shaka Senghor discuss: Why a healthy relationship with family is important Drug trafficking is a downward spiral Taking responsibility and ownership Commit to finishing something Key Takeaways: Family life is sacred. A healthy relationship and connection with family helps children be able to grow their own potential, become their best, and stay on the right path. People in the business of drug trafficking do earn a lot of money but they also earn a lot of trauma which will take years of hard work to unpack and heal from if they live long enough. The only way a person can really progress and grow psychologically is for them to reflect on their own life, ditch all excuses, and accept responsibility and take ownership of the consequences of their actions. If you find yourself starting a lot of things but always end up giving up along the way, then challenge yourself now to finish something. Give yourself a goal and give yourself a strict deadline. Another one is to encourage them and give them the opportunity to embrace creativity. Even if you don’t hit your kids, you might be passing on a certain kind of energy that will stick with them. Sometimes it’s important to pause and take a step back to look back at your experiences and everything that you’ve learned that you are grateful for. In this episode, Dr. George James and Leeor Gal discuss: Finding your own way Growing and developing Showing up as your authentic self Learning from others Key Takeaways: Finding your own way in your journey and figuring out where you want to go is something that takes work and sometimes takes more work than what you see others do. You’ve got to give yourself permission to try and to pivot whenever needed. We grow and we develop in what we do. Don’t be afraid to stumble because stumbling is an opportunity for growth and learning that will help you get to where you are supposed to be. Allow yourself to show up as your most authentic self. Don’t put any limits to yourself or to your dreams. In the journey towards reaching your dreams, there’s always somebody that has worked the path before you, someone you can learn from. There’s a lot of things you can figure out on your own but there are some things you can’t get to without support. In this episode, Dr. George James and Leon Ford discuss: Watching what we consume Finding your way to happiness Inspiring yourself first Collaborating to inspire change Key Takeaways: We have to be careful with what we fill ourselves with when we’re in pain or coming from a place of trauma. The tendency is that we consume more hatred, more negativity, bad food and bad habits. We end up with more hurt. No matter how justified, hatred brings darkness and pain in your life. You have to seek light - positivity, faith, hope, and love - so that you can truly see and find your way towards happiness. Inspiring others starts with inspiring yourself. In showing people your journey towards being a hero, don’t forget to shine a light on the healing part. Collaboration in creating a solution is the most efficient way to do activist work and the most effective way to inspire real change in your community. "I want to be an old man, there’s certain choices that I have to make to keep myself healthy - mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally - so that I can strive to become an old man. If I’m gonna let that anger consume me enough to do an act of violence then that could’ve killed me or put me inside of a prison or I could’ve let it fester inside of me… or I could make a conscious decision to let it go." — Leon Ford Connect with Leon Ford: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leon.ford.790 Twitter: https://twitter.com/leonfordspeaks Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/leonfordspeaks/ Connect with Dr. George James: Website: https://georgetalks.com | https://theleapcast.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/georgetalks/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrGeorgeJamesJr/ LEAPCast Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/333209771885091 Twitter: https://twitter.com/georgetalks YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/GeorgeTalksLLC/videos LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/GeorgeTalks Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. In this episode, Dr. George James and Paul C. Brunson discuss: Knowing who you are and being proud of it How to navigate different circles Giving yourself permission to go off script Being exceptional at one thing Key Takeaways: Strengthen your own personal identity. Always remember where you come from and who you are even while you move forward. It’s important to learn how you can manage yourself when navigating different circles. Embrace who you are while at the same time, have an emotional awareness to know that how you show up impacts the emotions of others. Learn how to turn up, turn down, turn left and right according to each situation. Give yourself permission to go off script, allow yourself to have fun, take risks, or do things that aren’t necessarily according to plan. It’s better to be exceptional in one thing than to be pretty good at a lot of things. Consider your current situation and identify your true passion, then, specialize and seek training in that one thing. In this episode, Dr. George James and BJ Johnson discuss: Going into the direction of your idea Inspiring people from a similar background Making people’s lives better with your life Key Takeaways: The idea that you have for your own life doesn’t have to be clearly defined, especially if you are still starting out. As long as you have a vague idea and you can pinpoint a direction on where to go, you’ll get there eventually. When you succeed, you don’t only enrich your own life but you also inspire those who live a life that has a lot in common with you, people who came from a similar background. As you go higher and as you do more, make sure that whatever you do makes the world better and makes people’s lives better as it does your own. "Whether I fit the image or not, I believe and have believed that that’s a space for me to occupy… Knowing that me, occupying the space impacts people, shifts people’s thoughts, and the legacy for others including my family and then the actual delivery of it, what I offer and how it comes about." — Dr. George James Connect with BJ Johnson: Website: https://metamorphinvest.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/Bj_metamorph Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bj.johnson.98096 Connect with Dr. George James: Website: https://georgetalks.com | https://theleapcast.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/georgetalks/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrGeorgeJamesJr/ LEAPCast Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/333209771885091 Twitter: https://twitter.com/georgetalks YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/GeorgeTalksLLC/videos LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/GeorgeTalks Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. In this episode, Dr. George James and Keren Eldad discuss: Asking the big questions now Honoring your promises to yourself The desire behind the desire The most authentic way to teach Key Takeaways: You don’t have to wait for trauma to come to you before you start asking the big questions of life. Ask them now. In case you are in a bad or uncomfortable place in your life, don’t be afraid to let go of what’s familiar. Hone in on that part of you that always knew how spectacular you are. Allow yourself to honor your promises to yourself. Recognize that you’re going to die, we have a finite time here. You might as well see your desires and the promises in your heart through. What is the desire behind your desire? If you make it to the top and still ask yourself “is this all that there is?” then what you must seek is clarity, ease, and joy. Those have to be the supreme desire. Intellectual learning isn’t as good as learning it from experience. That’s why being a coach means being able to guide from the standpoint of having gone through the lessons yourself. "It’s very hard for us to let go of what looks familiar and looks safe but you have to give yourself that permission, you have to trust your hunch that you are on to something and that there is a reason your soul is calling out for freedom and clarity. If you have that audacity to follow that rabbit down the hold, you will very likely end up in wonderland." — Keren Eldad Connect with Keren Eldad: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LiveWithEnthusiasm YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgGViwGVn_yrHkq3PQ9R_-Q Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/kereneldad/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachkeren/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/keren-eldad-5232033/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/realcoachkeren Connect with Dr. George James: Website: https://georgetalks.com | https://theleapcast.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/georgetalks/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrGeorgeJamesJr/ LEAPCast Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/333209771885091 Twitter: https://twitter.com/georgetalks YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/GeorgeTalksLLC/videos LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/GeorgeTalks Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Congratulate yourself for even trying. Invest in making progress towards your dreams in any way that you can. Don’t waste all your breaks on doing nothing, read books relating to that, improve your skills, practice your craft. Develop a mindset of recognizing that you live in abundance. In this episode, Dr. George James and Toney Goins discuss: Developing trustworthy relationships Learning to get help from other people Taking another path Being connected to what you love Key Takeaways: Develop relationships in which you can freely talk about what you’re going through. Seek different perspectives from other people, you might stumble into a golden piece of wisdom that you wouldn’t have thought of on your own. Stop doing things on your own. Learn to get help from other people, it’s simply the best way to live. Nobody wins all by themselves. It’s okay to switch up your journey whenever you detect the need to do so. It’s important to seek an inward awareness and figure out if what you’re doing is really what you’re meant to do or if it’s something you really want to even do in the first place. Be connected to the things that you love. It will provide energy. You can only be your best when you’re feeling fulfilled. In this episode, Dr. George James and Raiyonda Vereen discuss: Being confident while humble Discerning others’ advice Supportive relationships Expanding your horizon Key Takeaways: Display your confidence and back it all up with talent, skill, and hard work until somebody’s able to recognize you as the star that you are. You also have to be humble enough to do uncomfortable things especially at the start. There are some things in life that we will only be able to recognize as a good thing when looking at it from hindsight. It takes a lot of discernment and a bit of luck when deciding whether to follow our elders’ advice or not. A healthy and supportive relationship is essential to get you on the trajectory to success. Keep close those who support you and support them as well in their journey. Continue to be hungry for your own character development. In this episode, Dr. George James and Scott Palmer discuss: Normalizing mental wellness conversations Playing on the same team Facing the challenge yourself Tolerating people who are willing to change Key Takeaways: We all hope for a day in the future where talking about mental wellness isn’t a taboo subject, but something that can be talked about openly and honestly. It starts by integrating it into the media, and sharing our personal stories with others. Division and strife in society is something that can be amended by all sides recognizing that all of us are on the same team, that we all want the best good for our country and for our people. If you’re looking at the “other side” and wishing that they would try to educate themselves and make a more informed political decision, then take a look in the mirror first. Change starts with you - face that challenge yourself, look through and reevaluate your beliefs and biases. There is hope, things are moving forward but there is a long way to go. There has to be tolerance for people who are willing to be on the journey. "If we just normalize the message just a little bit more that mental health is important, mental wellness is important. If more people are just talking about it as just an everyday part of life. It’s an opportunity to impact the masses." — Dr. George James Born on Wednesday, October 26, 1949, Scott Palmer holds a Bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University, class of 1975. He was an English major before switching to broadcasting. He has covered an extensive range of sporting events throughout his career. It’s important to get through it and be able to live and grow right after. Get some good advice from your “crew” before making any major life decisions. Hopefully you’ve surrounded yourself with good people but it’s always best to get the opinion of people who love you and care for you. You can’t keep dwelling on the last game, you have to move forward, stay in the present, or you’ll get run over. We all need confidence. In this episode, Dr. George James and Dr. Stephen Treat discuss: Doing intrinsically meaningful things Moving forward through mentorship Surrounding yourself with people Extending the same faith in others Key Takeaways: Seek to do things that are intrinsically meaningful - the kind of activities or careers that bring joy into your life and create good in the world. You need to have a mentor that can see you differently to the way that you see yourself or think of yourself in order for you to move forward. Don’t carry it all by yourself. No matter what position you find yourself in, whether you’re a leader in your office or not - somebody’s got to know about the anxieties that you’re carrying, it will make you a better person. Remember the people that believed in you and pay it forward. Give people the same faith and care that people gave you - that same faith and care that got you to where you are. "He said, ‘Before the next board meeting, I need you to have an executive committee… instead of you just carrying the anxiety of holding this up, you’re gonna have 5 or 6 people to carry it with you as a team’ and I did that, I learned to be a much better leader. In this episode, Dr. George James and Kristin Henning discuss: Religion and Social Justice Having a vision for your life Countering the imposter syndrome Treating kids like kids Key Takeaways: Religion and social justice can, and is supposed to, go hand in hand in creating a fairer and better future for our society. If you’re young, you don't have to have your whole life figured out. Don’t pressure yourself, you’ll get there! It might take a bit of time and mind setting in order to truly feel like you deserve to be in the space that you’re in. Many people feel like you too, showing them that they belong starts with recognizing that you too do belong. We should be treating kids like they’re kids no matter the demographic they belong to. That should be common sense. When kids make a mistake we must discipline them and guide them to the right way, not put them in prison. "You stay the course and the money will follow. In this episode, Dr. George James and David Mann discuss: Change is sometimes what you need Committing to excellence Trusting in your own ability Learning to be selfish Key Takeaways: There’s always a positive side to change. It might feel like the worst thing in the world at the moment, but you’ll look back one day and realize that it was exactly what you needed to get you where you are today. Think of committing to excellence as a way of investing in your future happiness. Make an impact wherever you are and you’ll be sure to go places. In anything you do and whatever situation you find yourself in, you need to have some respect for yourself and confidence in your abilities. For some of us, one thing we really need to learn is the ability to be selfish. We serve, give, and care for those whom we love while neglecting ourselves. Make time for yourself and learn to say no. Stay grounded. Never let success get to your head because humility will always give you inner peace. You can be a jack of all trades, but you may end up wasting opportunities or not fully getting to that potential. Have a balance in doing those different skills or lock-in completely in a particular field and build that up, then opportunities will eventually come. Hopeful conversations about mental health will help more people to be more comfortable to seek help, learn to cope, and get back on track. "Most of the time, when we are met with challenges in life, we want to abandon it because it doesn't feel like it belongs. In this episode, Dr. George James and Jeff Gibbard discuss: Being heroic and healthy Passion is birthed by pain Poking holes into the lies Don’t sell yourself short Key Takeaways: Burying your emotions and pushing through despite suffering is very heroic, but not psychologically sustainable. There needs to be an element of self-care if you want to create the most good. Passion is often birthed by pain or compelled by trauma, but it has to be sustained by resolve and by choice. Be a hero by your own choice, and not by the choice of your demons. Stop wasting your time by beating yourself up. Negative thoughts are lies or founded on lies, but they’re so powerful that at times, we believe them. Poke holes into those lies, argue with them. Don’t sell yourself short. There’s so many facets of life that you have the potential to contribute that others may not have. You have value to give, believe that. You might discover things you wouldn’t have otherwise. Life is a marathon. It’s going to feel impossible sometimes, but staying down won’t help you get where you want. Get up and keep moving. Some people have success and greatness handed over to them, but many get there through perseverance, focus, and a bit of luck. In this episode, Dr. George James and Tasnim Sulaiman discuss: Searching for your true calling Listening to receive Mental health needs in people of color Supporting a cause you believe in Key Takeaways: You might find yourself in the right field, specialty or career but in the wrong application, job, or just the wrong fit. Try and search for what it really is that truly resonates with you. When it comes to emotional conversations, men have a lot more to say and a lot more depth if you give them the opportunity. Learn to listen and receive rather than respond. People of color are more likely to have a mental health issue but are significantly less likely to be able to receive care. This is in part due to them not being able to find a provider that can relate to their unique cultural experiences. If you believe in a cause but are unable to work on it personally, know that you can support it financially. Showing support through donations will help sustain the organization and allow the workers to do more good and continue doing it. In this episode, Dr. George James and Danny Green discuss: Putting 10,000 hours into it Knowing your value Making victory sweeter Running towards opportunity Key Takeaways: The journey is not going to be easy. You need to be willing to put in 10,000 hours into what you want to master. If you know that that’s where you belong, that you have much value to give, then there’s no need to turn back or fear the direction that you’re going. Winning is sweet, but the struggle and the challenge that it took to get that victory and the great people you met along the way makes it even sweeter. You miss a hundred percent of the shots you don’t take. Don’t shy away from opportunity, learn to track it head on. "Those things don’t just happen overnight, we put in thousands of hours and thousands of shots to prepare for those moments that we make big shots, or miss big shots. In this episode Dr. George Interviews Taniya Nayak about her career as a celebrity Interior Designer. Taniya and Dr. George James discus s: The inspiration that drove her to becoming an interior designer. The loving relationship between her family and friends. The importance of overcoming setbacks and being happy. Episode Highlights : 4:00 Taniya Nayak “After numerous jobs that just weren't a right fit for me. I literally had this moment of an aha kind of like, what am I doing? I'm too young. I can't be doing a job I hate for the rest of my life. So let me figure this out. And so I ended up waking up the next day, marching my butt right over to the Boston architectural college.” 16:00 Dr. George James “Yeah, I think about my family, and I just don't know how they did it. I don't know how they sacrifice their time, work so hard, so many hours, so many jobs, and still have time for family, faith, and community. When I think about it, I'm inspired. I also hear what you're saying, this thought of, we have to carry a lot and then how that can show up in our work or what we take on and I've heard so many people, especially a lot of high achievers will say like, they're just used to taking on a lot and and not never navigating the balance.” 38:00 Taniya Nayak “I will say as I became a professional, I realized the importance of giving back. And I feel like when I was younger I was always a part of Girl Scouts or whatever these groups that would give back in those ways. I would go to homeless shelters, I gave back. But it became more inherent to me as I got older that I needed to give back more. You know, it's a lot of these organizations that are catered towards children. And yeah, it fills a void for me that I know that I can help give back to, to kids and some, you know, in some way so you know, it's something I'm very passionate about.” Taniya Nayak’s Bio : Taniya Nayak has been regularly featured as host and interior designer on HGTV shows including “Battle on the Beach” and the upcoming Spring 2022 series “Build It Forward.” She is a featured designer on Food Network's “Restaurant Impossible” and a judge on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight.” Launching in late 2021 is Taniya’s much-anticipated first podcast, “The Break.” A native of India, this Boston-based designer is known for creating hot new restaurants and high end residential projects all over the US. In this episode, Dr. George James interviews Frank Sean Johnson. His roles as a producer, actor, writer, teacher and speaker emanate positivity from deep within Frank’s passion to keep living no matter what. Frank is a Veteran and providing service to the United States and its people. He has gone through many experiences that have shaped his life, up to this moment. Frank and Dr. George James discuss : How living with a disability is a blessing in disguise Frank’s career as an actor and how he carries his emotions into his roles in Madam Secretary and The Drummer Frank’s drive, determination and positive attitude manifesting themselves in his gameplay and teamwork off and on the court Post Traumatic Growth - The ability to grow and even thrive after experiencing traumatic experiences. Episode Highlights : 6:30 Frank Sean Johnson “I wake up in the morning, I can see the paradox, I can wake up, I can see I can't get up. You know, I can see people looking at me, and I think they're looking at me because I'm disabled. So all that information is always coming in, always coming in. And unless you talk to yourself more than that, you're always gonna find yourself, unbalanced, always gonna find yourself fighting to feel better. Being in the hospital as long as I was, and having time alone, after everybody left, and you're there by yourself, you got a lot of time to talk to yourself. The question is, what are you saying, what are you saying to yourself?” 31:00 Frank Sean Johnson “I've always liked telling the story. To me, ever since I was a kid, I wrote stories, I wrote poems, you know, then I got into rap. So I've always loved to tell the story, in a creative way. And so acting to me is just, it's telling a story, it's not yours, but it could be yours. Inspirational pieces are specifically what I like. I like to change people's perspective, or I like to add to it, or I like to make them think. And I think, with acting, you have to really empty yourself, you know, I think that's very therapeutic for me to just be able to let myself go and put on something else, overtop of that. And that's hard to do. Because the more hang ups you have about yourself, the harder it is to be vulnerable. It's hard to do that. .” 21:00 Dr. George James “I think that's important, so many people are in challenging situations, tough situations, where they feel overwhelmed, or they don't think it's going to be okay. Or they don't have a support system, or they haven't game planned, you know, the worst case scenario. And to hear what you're saying, Is that like, you know, at the same time, what is the silver lining? What is that thing that is going to bring light or hope? So I think, to me, that's what I've found inspiring in what you were able to do, because this is a time now, where because you were in the military, and came out. And now because you were injured, you went back. And while you're always connected, it sounds like you deepen your connection with the VA.” Frank Sean Johnson Bio : Frank Sean Johnson is an actor, known for Welcome to the Land of Misfits, Madam Secretary (2014) and The Drummer (2020). He is active in the wheelchair basketball community. Not only that, but he won 2 gold medals and 1 bronze medal in the 2013 National Veterans Wheelchair Games held in Tampa, Florida. Run through your own gratitude list. It’s a simple but effective practice in shifting your mindset. Every experience you’ve ever had counts. You might have done a huge pivot off of your original path, but the skills, memories, and learnings you’ve gained will be useful for wherever you want to be, wherever that is. In this episode, Dr. George James and Elizabeth Earnshaw discuss: Dealing with people that crush your dreams Dancing on the fine line between passionate and impulsive Having strong support in your life Rewarding people for doing good work Key Takeaways: There are a lot of people out there who’ll directly or indirectly crush your dreams - sometimes, from a place of genuine concern for you. It’s okay to listen to these people, but you don’t have to live according to what they think is possible. There’s a fine line between passionate and impulsive. Often we judge it as either of those by the time that we see the results. Would you be looking back 10 years from today and be able to say that you’re glad you took the risk? Everybody needs someone that understands and supports them and is willing to take action to help you get out of the situation you’re in at times that you’re unable to. Surround yourself with these people, and be this person to your loved ones. Reward people for doing good work, including yourself. If we’re disgruntled, it comes out one way or another. When you take care of the workers, they’ll be able to take care of people better. "If anybody is listening who’s in the messier part: keep going. There are always some unforeseen things that could appear and those are the moments I rest in my preparation. I know that I prepared. I know that I've done all that I can in my knowledge and what I can foresee and try to put out fires that haven't occurred yet.” 28:00 Dr. George James “I think that's really powerful. This thought of being a high achiever going after those goals and dreams. Sometimes we can produce our life. Like we can have in lockstep thinking “this is going to happen” and “that's going to happen” and then when we get sidetracked or something happens we can be as they say, in our feelings. And sometimes it's necessary, because you just never know where the opportunity is.” 29:00 Esteban Serrano “Alright, that didn’t happen and you ask ‘what's next?’ because something has got to be coming down the pipe If you don’t let me have that one. Every time it works out that way, and I'm constantly a student, not only of hip hop, television and film, but I'm also a student of me and my spirituality, the path that I'm walking, I know that I'm not perfect at it, and there's times that I've slipped up or there's times like that where I'll be mad at God and you know he shows me, something better. But now I'm at the point where if something doesn't work out even if I really, really wanted it, I know, because he's proven to me time and time again that something better is about to happen.” Esteban Serrano’s Bio: Esteban Serrano has built a career in television working nearly 2 decades in the industry. At the heart of his career, he is a storyteller and producer. From his early days at MTV in 2004 producing the iconic TRL, to his present days at the network helping to relaunch Yo! MTV Raps in countries like Asia, the United Kingdom and beyond, it’s the stories and love of hip hop that fuel his passion. Esteban Serrano’s Pre-Performance Ritual: I always ask God for guidance. He also hosts an original show called “The Jerrick Report.” Mike Jerrick and Dr. George James discuss the importance of: Growing up in a conservative home, but still keeping his identity. Making the most of moments while you are still alive with those around you. Recognizing how depression starts and overcoming it. Highlights: 18:30 Mike Jerrick “I quit that job in New York to everybody's shock and dismay, because the show was number one. I quit and flew to Los Angeles and did that show. The main reason was the only reason, so my father could see me on TV. It felt good because about a year after I started doing it, my mother told me he would watch it every day. He doesn't miss it at all. You know, he'll go sit down and watch it every day.” 35:00 Mike Jerrick “Some things happened and I went down a bad rabbit hole of depression and couldn't get out of it. So I figured I'll drink my way out of it. But that didn't work, obviously, so I got so bad. I did go see a psychiatrist and he gave me antidepressants. So I got well and he told me, don't drink alcohol with it. Yeah, but of course I did. So now, one drink was like two and it was like four. Yeah ,and thank God, the station stepped in and allowed me to go to a rehab facility in North Carolina, but it was mainly for the depression. I could not get out of it. I didn't go to work. I couldn't move. And if I did move, it was just a walk around my apartment or walk out here in Philadelphia, just wandering the streets because I didn't want to lay down and I couldn't go to sleep. I just want to lay there. So I went down there for 30 days of therapy. We talked about a lot of stuff. And when I came out of there, I have not had those depressing negative thoughts ever since then. It was remarkably successful.” 30:00 Dr. George James “Yeah, I think that sometimes our families don't always show up for us the way that we need or want. I grew up an only child. I do have a sister I learned later in life. And we're close. But the people that have been family to me have been friends. And yeah, and I've come to appreciate them, you know, like, appreciate that I can share my life with them. And it sounds like for you in these big moments, probably great, amazing moments and maybe even though, sad moments, you are able to go to your friends.” Mike Jerrick Bio: Mike is the anchor of Good Day Philadelphia on Fox29 and host of The Jerrick Report. I thought I was looking in the mirror with the same kind of personality. Lisa Fisher, Lionel Richie felt like family. And when we finally met, he was like, cousin. Because it's just because I interviewed him on the phone for years. It's just family. Nice. You know, Jamie Foxx, it feels like family, you have to do something. I hosted his book tour in Philadelphia. And it was like talking with an old friend.” 38:00 Patty Jackson “There was a time when my mom was dying ... I was in denial ... I didn't want to accept it...I always felt like that Smokey Robinson song, Tears of a Clown. "You may see a smile on my face. But it's only they're trying to fool the public. But when it comes down to fooling you." I remember when I interviewed Smokey Robinson, I said, I know I was just a baby, but I felt like you were writing about my life...And I never wanted to admit depression. You know, a lot of people will never admit it, but there will be times in our life where we will go through depression. And it's okay to say, I'm not okay.” 37:00 Dr. George James “I love the fact that you know, my mom always says: “You give people flowers while they're alive.” And you are honorable and you recognize what people have done in the impact. And I think that just highlights the impact that you've had, through your voice, through your craft, through the radio, through the community, the concerts, the conversations, being an auntie, just the way you show up. I think it's just great. Someone or a group of people said, Let's just honor you and make it public.'' Bio: Her voice is warm, soulful and sweet! Patty’s mid-day program, her Cafe 105, and 4-1-1 features are all considered mandatory to Philadelphia’s adult radio listeners! In this episode, Dr. George James interviews Brian Dawkins. A NFL Hall of Famer that played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Denver Broncos and is now the author of “Blessed by The Best: My Journey to Canton and Beyond” Brian Dawkins and Dr. George James discuss the importance of: Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida and performing at professional levels consistently. Brian Dawkins shares his method of being able to achieve that high level of success. How the hardships he faced molded him into his way of thinking and finding the formula to let him achieve his goals. Highlights: 10:0 Brian Dawkins “When you give your all into something, your brain produces a lot of the I kind of feel good chemicals into your system even before you have the success. The ultimate success is your grinding and getting closer and trying to just get better and better and better. And it's in the incremental steps of getting better that we need to really fall in love with. You fall in love with the journey is what I'm saying, not the end result. Chemicals are hitting your body. You want more of that. I want more of that. How? You begin to research what can I do more of to get more of that feeling that I'm feeling on the way to this success that I'm looking for, right? So that's that determination. That's that drive. And that does not come if you do not give it your all into it. Pour yourself into it. Whatever it doggone takes. We hear that phrase a lot. Whatever it takes, I'm willing to do whatever it takes. All you really are. You really? Are you really willing to grind to get to that thing to to push through some of the discomfort?” 31:00 Brian Dawkins “Why should I limit myself? Then my thought is and as I study, as I study and know more now that the thing that was limiting me early on was my thoughts of me, that what was limiting me, I had limiting beliefs in certain areas. And so it was hard for me to then go outside of the framework of what I thought of myself. So when I grabbed an idea, I began to develop a better image of who I not only just am but who I could be. So, much open up. And now some of the other things that were binding me down. Some of the strongholds begin to just fall off because I saw something different. I saw what was possible for me.” 23:00 Dr. George James “One of the ways that I've shared that with people is that we have to create our own tribe. And in that tribe, I fully believe, right, there are those people that need to be in it. It might be your spouse or the person in a relationship with. It might be the boy who makes you laugh. It might be your spiritual adviser. These people that we have in a close kind of community that we can reveal when we're in need of support. Hey, I'm winning, but I need people who are going to celebrate my winning because, you know, everybody can't celebrate when you win it, right? And I appreciate that you know that look, I can reach out to people because that's one of the things that sometimes we forget that people who have done great things like yourself. We all need people in our circle that are trusted, that have been proven because not everybody can ride with you.” Bio:Brian Dawkins was born on October 13, 1973 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA as Brian Patrick Dawkins. He is known for his work on NFL Monday Night Football (1970), The NFL on CBS (1956) and Phillies Nation TV (2012). He has been married to Connie Dawkins since July 5, 1994. They have two children. In this episode, Dr. George James interviews Kenny Holdsman about his colorful journey towards becoming the current President, CEO and co-founder of the Philadelphia Youth Basketball team. Kenny Holdsman and Dr. George James discuss: Finding one’s true personal and professional fulfillment Embracing Social Justice Facing fears, making difficult decisions and overcoming setbacks Highlights: 9:00 Kenny Holdsman “I think what it taught me is that, you know, for starters, we're all human beings, we all want to self determine and be happy. We generally have similar values. And it taught me that regardless of one starting point, one's faith, tradition, the complexion of one skin, that we're all to be valued and we're all valuable, and having friendships with people who have walked in different shoes than yourself. People who look different than yourself, all that stuff is to be embraced even more fully, that all too often, people just retreat into these cocoons. They kind of replicate what's comfortable, you go to high school, and then you hang out with the same crew that you built in middle school. And then you go to college, and you try to replicate it in the people and a lot of times that creates, you know, serious homogeneity. One of the things that I got from Cheltenham was, being comfortable in your own skin, and appreciating people's differences, not from the level of tolerance, but from the level of, like, genuine curiosity and appreciation.” 11:00 Kenny Holdsman “I think I have an overdeveloped need to derive meaning and purpose and psychic value from my work. And it's that, I receive an abundance. It's bountiful. And I wake up every day, really energized and excited to get after it with my colleagues. And so to think about that, in terms of sacrifice just seems off to me. I do think that there's moments where I need to try to subjugate my own voice and bigness and take a step back and allow others who are, in many ways, have a deeper connection to the cause and to the community to speak for us.” 29:00 Dr. George James “I've had moments where I've had an idea and have started to see it come to fruition. I mean, I remember doing events for couples. And you know, what I thought and believed about that new, innovative, creative way, and just seeing it start to come to life, just feels really great.” Bio: President and CEO Kenneth Holdsman has been a staple in the Philadelphia Youth development community for over three decades. His leadership and meaningful contributions in the lives of young people and communities, both on and off the court, has been felt both locally and nationally. Growing up in Elkins Park, PA, Kenny is a proud graduate of Cheltenham High School, Lehigh University, and Temple University School of law. Lony’e and Dr. George James discuss the importance of: How Lony’e began her acting career and her background The struggles of being able to achieve that level of success Multiple facets of life that impact the journey and path we are all on Highlights: 2:00 - Lony’e Perrine “I was studying various different things, but I started out as a kid actor doing commercials. My mother was a model, so I had left that behind…” Lony’e Perrine: I kind of phased out of acting and just was focused solely on running, which led me to Villanova. But while I was there, I was in that weird stage of trying to figure out what I really wanted to do because I was a political science major, English major minor and Africana studies major while running on track, but I also took theater classes at school. So it was kind of like all over the place. My advice is try everything until you find something that grabs you, that you just really can't resist doing.“ 35:00 - Lony’e Perrine “I want to create something and I feel like as a creative person, we have stories in us that we want to tell, and no one's going to be able to tell them better than us… You get attached to that and you really want that role because you won't be able to tell that story because of that topic, or that storyline you're passionate about...” 15:00 - Dr. George James “I love that you were dropping so many really important gems and nuggets. I appreciate your willingness to. This internal struggle, the anxiety attacks, going into something and in your spirit, in your heart, in your soul, you knew it just wasn't right. And how we do that, we force ourselves to just keep going. And how like you felt that along the way there...I don't know if I'm doing this right or if I'm too old or all the other negative self-talk that can happen. And you kept pushing your way through...
