في هذه الحلقة من «كتالوج» نقابل الفنانة ندى الشاذلي، لنتكلم عن «أهوار» أول ألبوماتها الموسيقية. صدر «أهوار» عن تسجيلات «نوى» عام 2017، إلا أن ندى كانت بدأت كتابة الأغاني وتأليف الموسيقى فيه من 2013، وواصلت تطويره والتجريب فيه بطرق مختلفة، في حفلاتها الموسيقية الحية في أوروبا والولايات المتحدة ودول أخرى، منها أندونيسيا.

سنسأل ندى عن مصادر إلهامها، عن عملية تسجيل الألبوم مع أكثر من عشرين موسيقي في كندا، عن كيف أسست فرقتها مع شريف المصري وكونراد أجنس وموريتز أجنس، من أجل أن تلعب الألبوم في عروض حية، وكيف تغير ذلك أثناء جولتها في الولايات المتحدة.

سنسمع سويًا نسخًا مختلفة من «أنا عشقت»، أغنية سيد درويش، التي أعادت ندى توزيعها مع سام شلبي، وضمتها لـ«أهوار». أيضًا ستحكي لنا ندى عن أغنية «برزخ» التي كتبتها مع عليا أيمن، ووزعتها ندى وسام وموريس لوقا، كما ستلعبها لنا على الجيتار في الاستديو، لتساعدنا على تخيّل عملية إبداعها من البداية.

In each episode, we feature a guest musician, and together we break down their tracks to give our listener a more intimate understanding of the complex layers that make up their unique sound.

In this episode of Katalog, we sit with Nadah El Shazly to talk about Ahwar, her debut solo album. Ahwar was released on Nawa Recordings in 2017, but Nadah began writing the body of work as far back as 2013, and continued to evolve it through different live performances across Europe, America, and other countries including Indonesia until the onset of corona in 2020.

We speak with Nada about her source of inspiration, and the process of recording the album with close to 20 musicians in Canada. We also speak with her about how she constructed her band with Cherif El Masri, Conrad Agnas and Mauritz Agnaz in order to perform it live, and how this changed during her tour in America.

We also listen to various live and recorded iterations of the song “Ana Ishiqt”, originally by Sayyed Darwish, and rearranged by Nadah and Sam Shalabi for Ahwar. Nadah also helps us to understand how “Barzakh” came to be, a song co-written with Alia Ayman, and arranged by Nadah, Sam, and Maurice Louca. Nadah also plays us the bassline of the song on a guitar in the studio to help us hear how it all began.

But to begin with, Nadah explains how the album started, on performing solo, and her work with Maurice, Sam, and his band, Land of Kush.
