This episode is one of the best for truly understanding what Jesus is saying and getting rid of our old works-based image of God that is mostly rooted in condemnation, fear, rejection and generally just feeling like we "aren't good enough."
Peter has a huge success and actually gets out of the boat and truly walks on water towards Jesus! It is amazing! Note, the other 11 disciples are NOT getting out of the boat ; )
However on the way to Jesus, Peter takes his eyes of Jesus, because of the roaring waves and begins to sink.
Does Jesus lecture Peter as he is going down? Does Jesus criticize Peter for failure or not doing enough? No! No! Not at all. Jesus "immediately" reaches out and rescues Peter.
We often mis-interpret Jesus next words to Peter as finding fault with him, "Oh, you of little faith, why did you doubt?" However we usually interpret this sentence out of our condemnation mindset (read, "the flesh" from Romans 8 - the old mindset) or our shame or our "we aren't enough" mindset.
But since Jesus didn't reject Peter for huge sins like denying Jesus in public or trying to control Jesus (see Day 12) then Jesus isn't rejecting Peter here. And Jesus isn't even criticizing Peter or shaming him. Jesus is basically saying, "You don't have to doubt. Next time I want you to keep your eyes on Me the whole time and I want you to go the entire distance!"
Jesus is basically "coaching Peter up" to be the best athlete (follower) that Peter can be.
And since you see Jesus, you also see what God is like. (John 14:9, Hebrews 1:3)
God isn't rejecting you or shaming you when you fail. He isn't saying you aren't doing enough. God is challenging you to stay connected to Him so that you can go the entire distance during the storms of your life. God is coaching you up to make you stronger to be able to care about your people!
