Why Does Passion Matter in Your Career?
Whether you are a seasoned leader or find yourself aspiring to leadership, passion in your career is non-negotiable. Otherwise, what you do for work whittles away at who you are in the process of doing it.
A former client, let’s call her Alex was an accountant at a medium-sized firm, and she was struggling with her job. Alex felt disconnected, each day filled with dread. Mornings were awful, and it wasn’t about the early start, but rather because of the lack of motivation for the day's work. She painfully watched the clock, and her work output was there, but her heart wasn’t. She was the classic definition of disengaged. She squeaked by with satisfactory performance reviews but never really excelled. And, it didn’t just affect her at work, it started to affect her at home. Snapping at people she loved and having outbursts over things she couldn’t control.
Have you been there?
So what can you do instead? I’m so glad you asked. It's about connecting your daily work to a deeper sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. When you're passionate about what you do, it transforms your approach to work, and to life. You're not just going through the motions; you're engaged, motivated, and ready to overcome whatever the day brings because you’re connected with a sense of purpose. Let’s be clear, this isn't just about feeling good—it's about more easily performing at your best and making a meaningful impact.
What Exactly Is Passion in Your Career?
Well, that depends on you because it is defined and continually refined by you. Passion in your career means more than just enjoying what you do. It's about feeling deeply connected to your work, finding joy and excitement in your tasks, and being driven by a purpose that aligns with your core values and who you are authentically. Richard Branson once said, "There is no greater thing you can do with your life and your work than follow your passions in a way that serves the world and you." This underscores the power of passion in unlocking your highest potential and contributing to something larger than yourself.
How to Discover and Cultivate Your Passion:
  1. Get Curious: Understand that passion isn't always an innate feeling; it's something that can be developed and nurtured. Start by exploring what interests you, what you care about, and what activities bring you joy.
  2. Reflect on Your Values: Your career should reflect your personal values. Ask yourself what aspects of work are most important to you—flexibility, autonomy, teamwork, respect? Identifying these can guide you toward a leadership role that resonates with your core beliefs.
  3. Seek What Excites You: Pay attention to the parts of your current job or activities that light you up. These are clues to what your passions might be. It's about recognizing what feels effortless and energizing.
  4. Embrace Change and Exploration: Remember, your passions can evolve. Be open to new experiences and willing to reassess what makes you happy over time. Passion is a journey, not a destination.

Finding a career and leadership role you're passionate about is a continually evolving process that requires your introspection, curiosity, and courage. It's about asking yourself the hard questions, being honest about your answers, and daring to pursue what truly lights you up. If you're ready to embark on this journey, begin by exploring your values, interests, and what brings you joy. Consider seeking guidance through mentorship or professional development opportunities to further refine your path.
Remember, the pursuit of passion in your career is not just about personal satisfaction; it's about cultivating a leadership style that is authentic, impactful, and inspiring. As you navigate this journey, keep in mind that your passion not only benefits you but also those you lead and serve. So, take the first step today towards a career that not only meets your needs but also fulfills your deepest aspirations.
