They discuss how youth culture influenced entertainment and education including the history of hip-hop, how to connect with your students via their interests, how the first few weeks of the school year are important and more! Dr. Rawls is not only a scholar and an educator, but he is also a practitioner of Hip-Hop. Dr. Rawls contributed production on the album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, which was critically acclaimed as one of the best albums of 1998 and was a major force in the late-1990s underground hip hop explosion. Dr. Rawls has also produced and DJ’ed for artists such as the Beastie Boys, Ghostface of WuTang Clan, Capital Steez (Pro Era), Slum Village, Souls of Mischief, 9th Wonder, and Us3. In addition to his work in music, Dr. Rawls holds a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Cincinnati, a master’s degree in education from Ashland University, and an Educational Doctorate in Educational Administration from Ohio University. Dr. Rawls has presented workshops on the music industry, Hip-Hop Education and beat making at several major universities around the country. For the second year in a row, Sean is joined by guests from our recruitment and retention task force to discuss For the Love of Health and Physical Education (HPE) Week! Emily Jones is a Professor of Physical Education Teacher Education, in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation at Illinois State University. She is the current chair of the SHAPE America Recruitment and Retention Task Force and serves at the state level as the chair of the IAHPERD Higher Education Committee. At Illinois State she is program director for the undergraduate PE teacher education and coordinates the fully online master’s in Physical Education Pedagogy sequence at ISU. Dr. Jones conducts research related to recruitment into the field of physical education including the need to increase the diversity of those entering the teaching force. She also conducts research related to school- and community-based physical activity programs and initiatives that enhance health and wellness. Ben Schwamberger is an Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education, in the Human Performance Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU, Mankato). He currently serves on the SHAPE America Professional Preparation Council as well as the Recruitment and Retention Task Force and is an active member of his state association MNSHAPE. At MSU, Mankato he is the undergraduate program coordinator for the Health and Physical Education program. Dr. Schwamberger’s research interests relate to physical education and physical activity of homeschool students. Prior to his position in higher education, Dr. Schwamberger was an elementary and high school physical educator and taught within the United States as well as abroad.…

Ruth Childs Ruth Childs, MFA, is a professor at State University of New York at Brockport. She has been at the College of Brockport Department of Theatre and Music Studies since 2001. Her teaching specialties include public speaking, acting, voice and speech, improv, and the politics of theatre. Childs served as regional chair of the National Playwriting Program for Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and has been a respondent and reader for national and regional playwriting awards. She was awarded the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Gold Medallion. Childs is a public speaking consultant as well as a specialist in teaching self-advocacy. She directs the self-advocacy program at Camp Abilities each summer. Lauren J. Lieberman Lauren J. Lieberman, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Service Professor in the Kinesiology Department at the State University of New York at Brockport (SUNY) in adapted physical education. She started her career teaching at the Perkins School for the Blind in the Deafblind program. She is co-director of the Institute on Movement Studies for Individuals with Visual Impairments or Deafblindness (IMSVI) (see www.brockport.edu/IMSVI ) and founder and director of Camp Abilities , an educational sports camp for children with visual impairments. Lieberman has published over 193 peer-reviewed articles and 21 books and has been an invited guest speaker in the U.S. and internationally. She is a Research Fellow with the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity and has won awards from numerous organizations for her work. Mary Connolly Mary Connolly, BS, Med, is a professor at Cambridge College and adjunct professor at Curry College. She is an accomplished health education professional whose career spans nearly four decades and includes teaching and administration in public schools and higher education. Connolly served on the committee to revise the National Health Education Standards and is a member of the Massachusetts Interdisciplinary Health Education and Human Services Advisory Council and the American School Health Association (ASHA), Coordinator’s Committee, and is a reviewer for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. She presents at numerous state and national conferences and is a member of SHAPE America, AAHE, SOPIE, ASHA, ASCD, and MAAHPERD.…

Sean and Korey discuss a variety of topics including Korey’s career and roles at Springfield College, culturally relevant pedagogy, race & more. Korey Boyd is an assistant professor in the School of Physical Education, Performance and Sport Leadership at Springfield College in Massachusetts. His primary role at Springfield College is teaching undergraduate and graduate Secondary methods courses in the Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) initial leisure program. His philosophy of PETE follows similar logic and produces the following axiom: Produce better thinkers, not better thinking. Boyd’s research focuses on evidence-based teaching practices in physical education that work toward achieving racial equity and cultural relevancy in PE pedagogy. He conducts and publishes research focused entirely on the links between race and teaching physical education.
