Brittney is a clinical counselor, a certified meditation guide, and a registered yoga teacher. Meditation, Yoga (Philosophy and Asanas), cognitive psychology, neurobiology, and counseling have been the tools that have helped her to befriend her suffering and sometimes heal from it. Her connection to meditation and Yoga began to deepen about 10 years ago in an attempt to heal from workplace burnout and maladaptive coping strategies. For the last 4 years, she has been sharing the physical practice of Yoga and meditation with folks from all walks of life through her online community Mindfully Being Well , as a corporate wellness facilitator, and as a trauma-informed Yoga teacher trainer at Yoga Outreach . Now, as a trauma-informed clinical counselor, she works collaboratively with clients utilizing mind-body connection and relationship to support full body, heart, and mind healing and integration. In the context of mindfulness, mediation, and Yoga, Brittney feels that it is important to locate herself within a sociocultural context to acknowledge that these sacred philosophies and practices are not part of her ethnic or cultural heritage. Brittney is originally from a rural community in the interior of what is colonially known as British Columbia. Her father's family came to Turtle Island from what was then Prussia at the end of the 1700s. They were Mennonite pacifists and were fleeing religious persecution and military inscription. Her mother's parents are of Irish, Scottish, German, British, and Cowichan descent. She was the first in her immediate family to graduate high school, university. Brittney’s understanding, practice, and teaching of mindfulness, meditation and Yoga are earnest and with deep gratitude for her teachers' teachers. The audio-visual universe of contemporary Creole-Canadian music producer and creative director Sika Valmé, is an expertly crafted collection of timeless, relatable narratives. Born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Sika now resides between Montréal, New York, and Mexico. Her creations, reflections of her many migrations, find inspiration in geometry, the natural world, and the human experience. Sika’s work is an immersive encounter, one that synergizes opposing elements to create a distinct style with an unforgettable sound. Dubbed as “ Creole-LoFi”, the rich and layered textures of her music offer an unconventional take on Caribbean rhythms. Her visual art compliments her music with bright, colorful imagery that plays with the same tensions between disparate geographies and cultures. The result is a body of work that illuminates elements of Sika’s Diasporic journey, and offers a fresh and innovative cultural perspective. This unique approach, coupled with her remarkable vocal styling, has positioned Sika as a formidable artist and collaborator. In the episode, we talked a fair bit about Sika’s video called Mango. If you’ve been following us for a while, you know that this podcast is produced by Dr.Lambstein productions. Our beloved Ian is the magician behind all the episodes. This episode is about him. After some soul searching, and embracing that our focus is stories, we could not help but open the doors to our listeners so they know about the other half of Teach Reach. In a conversation that flows like two dudes sitting at a bar, we went from sports banter, immigration, the importance and value of community building, teaching, and political takes. I am honored to call such a brilliant soul a friend, and to build this project with him. Enjoy the ride! Kym Dominique Ferguson is a poet by birth, a theater performer and filmmaker by training, and a producer by nurture. For over a decade he has serenaded Montréal and international audiences with his blending of spoken word poetry and theater. He successfully produced and performed his first one-man show to a sold-out audience back in August of 2015: The Born Jamhaitianadian . Kym is also a radio show host on Soul Perspectives since 2012, a show which talks about the issues affecting the Black community in Montreal, across Canada and internationally. He is currently working on the development for his first theater play: The #DearBlackMan Project , officially commissioned by Black Theater Workshop. This was a true Caribbean reunion, in content and length. We contemplated Kym’s passions for comic books, his relationship with his father - his superhero; his Haitian and Jamaican roots, his art, and the many stories that brought him where he is now. Throughout the conversation, Kym invited us to listen and follow our voice. It was an honor to discuss with such a vibrant and powerful soul. During the show, Kym mentioned some books by Dr. Nnedi Okorafor. (photo credit: @koraliedw) I could have an entire season of this podcast with Oliviers... Olivier Day is a close friend but more importantly a mentor. This podcast, Teach Reach, would not have been possible without his unconditional support, guidance, and generosity. Olivier is an avid photographer, a captivating storyteller, an amazing father, a supportive husband, a passionate mental health advocate, and a professional podcaster. Really, a true renaissance man! There is a truth circulating in the podcast world, from Chris Williamson, that goes as follow: "90% of podcasts launched don't make it past episode 3; of the 10% that make it past episode 3, 90% don't make it past episode 20. So simply by producing 21 podcasts, you're in the top percentile of all podcasters ever." Well, Olivier’s podcast, Awaken the Awesome , is at episode 156. You can understand why I need to have a brother like him on my podcast journey. Not only in the sheer number but also when it comes to topics that he covers on his podcast, Olivier is a fountain of wisdom. During this episode he geeks with our producer, Ian Lamb, offers his kind view on what it means to be vulnerable, to be available for your family, his view on fatherhood, and how to tell yourself the truth, to unlock your awesomeness. Olivier invites us to do better, everyday. Also, as Haitians, it was inevitable not to talk about Haiti and touch on how we process events related to our motherland. It was a delightful conversation and an absolute honour to have such a good dude on the show. You can listen to Olivier's podcast, Awaken the Awesome, on Apple Podcasts , Google , and Spotify , or wherever you get your podcast. Well, the name in the title already gave it away! Yes, Olivier and I are related: We are brothers. Olivier is an experienced multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal, Quebec. He graduated from Ecole Nationale de la Chanson de Granby in 2017, and he is completing his professional artistic training in dance with NYATA NYATA dance company in July 2021. Olivier has recently launched a creative platform called Asògwe (meaning the one who holds sacred knowledge; high priest) . Through afro-centric workshops at Asògwe, he wishes to create a space for those who see Art as a relationship with the “sacred”, a portal to the divine. On this episode, Olivier shared with us how he is going through life with art and music via a life principle, learned at NYATA NYATA, called Loketo . It was a true haitian conversation - full of joy, laughter, a couple of trips down memory lane interspersed with profound wisdom and tidbits on how to walk through life. It was an absolute delight to kick off this podcast with Olivier, my brother and first teacher! You can connect with Olivier via his facebook page , his official website , listen to his music here , and get more info about the workshops at his creative platform, Asògwe, here . Enjoy the ride!
