Gene Baur is the founder of Farm Sanctuary, a place of rescue, refuge, and adoption for hundreds of farm animals each year. Farm Sanctuary shelters enable visitors to connect with farm animals as emotional, intelligent individuals. Gene has also led campaigns to change laws about animal treatment and taken undercover photographs of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting deplorable conditions. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals, and his rescue work inspired an international farm sanctuary movement. Once called “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine, Gene walks the walk and talks the talk when it comes to food and animal rights. Jay and Gene discuss the political and cultural steps that will bring about the end of factory farming and a healthier approach to animals and food. Dusty conditions. Gusty Winds. Record Times. New Tech. This Leadville Trail 100 MTB had a lot to remember it by. We cover it all and then some in our annual Race Recap Show. We kick things off by checking in with racers at the startline. Were there nerves? Yes. Was there optimism? Sure. We then go out on course and out to Twin Lakes Alternate which was the busiest it's ever been. Fatty talks about his new, duo bladder system that provides water and energy gel. We also hear from a racer who got Siri involved in his feed zone strategy. Drop bars were a big topic that get addressed both from a rider's perspective and from an industry expert. There was a new dream chaser on course and we talked to him and his day of passing the masses. Finally we wrap things up by highlighting the finish times and stories of the racers who have played a part in this show.…

We're out of time for the big gains. The training is done. But between now and race day we can find ways to save time on the Leadville course. One of those ways is to maintain your momentum even when the course tries to slow you down. In this episode we will emphasize some basic mountain biking skills and overlay them onto some crucial spots of the Leadville course: The top of Kevins, the Pipeline Switchbacks, the Columbine descent through the trees and that hard left at the bottom of the Blvd climb. To guide us through these sections and to talk about the skills needed, we have invited back Leadville veteran Nate Whitman. Nate is going for his 23rd finish this year. Nate has four top tens and three sub-7 hour finishes. But he also knows this race as a 10+hour finisher. And he has helped dozens of others - including our own Hottie - get involved with and get to know the Leadville Trail 100. In addition to finding us some speed on course, Nate is also on hand to answer some listener submitted questions.…

There’s a lot to training for an event like Leadville: The miles, the intervals, the weeks of wondering if you’re getting it right. But what about those last couple weeks. For this year we’re talking about the days between July 26th and August 9th. This is the time most coaches will outline a training taper. The idea sounds straight foward: back off all the miles, keep some intensity, and allow your body to reap the benefits of all that training. Yet it’s so easy to get it wrong and go to the line with something less than what we are truly capable of. Well to help us get it right we have called back Season 5 coach Cody Waite who is going to spell out how to Nail Your Taper for Leadville. As always, thanks for listening and we will see you at the Start Line! Coach Cody is at: waiteendurance.com…

When it comes to the Leadville Trail 100 MTB Race, tires are the most hotly debated tech topic. The participants' page and other forums are littered with discussions on what tire to run, what tire is best, what tire is the lightest, and so on. These discussions can be somewhat beneficial but what most of them lack is real data. Well we found one tech head who is putting XC tires to the test to come up with actual numbers that characterize a tires’ rolling performance. John Karrasch of Cahaba Cycles is our guest and expert for this episode. John has been on a quest to find the fastest off-road tires. Some of the tires he’s been testing are gravel tires but most are the kinds of tires a Leadville Racer would run: XC mountain bike tires. The Vittoria Peyote, the Continental Race King and Dubnital, and the Maxxis Aspen and Aspen ST are all tires John has tested in the field. He’s been feeding GPS, power, speed, weight, and wind resistance data into a program to come up with rolling resistance figures. We’re not gonna lie, this is pretty heady stuff. But by the end of the interview we boil it down to the tires that roll the fastest and hopefully point Leadville racers to a handful that will do best at Leadville. Mentions in this episode: John’s Instagram - flexfitbyjohn Rolling resistance effect on power and speed - gribble.org…

At some point, you're going to wish you'd listened more closely to this episode. And we're betting that point is as you're riding inbound from Pipeline to the base of Powerline and confronting a headwind that can charitably be called "evil." The fact is, we all think about iconic climbs when we think of Leadville, but you'll spend far more time on rolling and flat terrain than you will on Columbine and Powerline. So: being aero matters. And this episode, we have two true experts to help you cheat the wind on race day.…

This podcast has always been about regular people who are racing the Leadville 100: real people with real jobs and families, who find a way to do something big and bold: ride the highest and hardest one-day race in the country. Natalie Dyksterhouse is doing exactly that. She has a career (as does her husband). She has two young children. And this year, she will be racing the LT100 for the first time. But while ANYONE who does this race (especially the first time) is doing something pretty amazing, Natalie is upping the ante: she's planning to win it. No, she's not going for an age group podium, she's going for a straight-up win. We love this big goal, and you'll love this dark-horse story. Don't miss this episode!…

We're also EXTREMELY pleased to welcome Alison Tetrick back to the show, with her story of racing the LT100 for the first time. If you're ever at a Leadville Party and the energy starts to lag, you know with 100% certainty you can jumpstart the conversation by asking, "So what tires are the best for Leadville?" In reality, though, that question doesn't really make much sense until you understand the anatomy of tires: their composition and performance characteristics. That’s what we aim to do in this show. To help us, we have recruited someone who has no brand loyalty or connection: Velo and Pinkbike Sr Tech Editor Troy Templin. Get ready for some Tire Talk! In our LFAQ section, we focus on another hotly-debated topic: weight. There's a temptation to get as thin as possible for the LT100, and it makes intuitive sense: there's a lot of climbing in this race, and the less you have to drag up to 12,500 feet, the better. But Hottie and Fatty have both tried the "get as skinny as possible" approach and have some different opinions. This is a practical episode you can definitely use for a better day on the course; don't miss it!…

We deep dive into St. Kevens, the first big climb of the day, talking race strategy and what it feels like to climb 700 feet in 1.5 miles on a cold morning at 10,000' Hottie and Fatty also welcome Rohit Bery — one of the hundreds of racers starting from the White Corral in 2021 — to get a sense of how much of a funneling effect the back third of the race experiences when hitting the dirt and then turning onto the first big climb. Finally, Kimo Seymour joins to explain how the LT100 MTB race experience will be different with the introduction of the Life Time Grand Prix. There's a ton of great info this episode. Don't miss it!…

When we think about Leadville, we think about climbing. And when we think about climbing, we think about watts/Kg. And that makes us think about losing a few pounds to be a little faster on race day. But do we over-emphasize weight for this weight? And if we do diet, what's the right diet to do? This is a great episode for everyone who (like one of the hosts of this show) worries about weight.…

We start every episode of this show by describing the LT100MTB race as "the highest and hardest 1-day race in the country." We stand by that...but how much of "hardest" is due to "highest?" Can you give yourself an advantage in the race by spending more time in Leadville before the race? If so, how much time, and how much does it help? We have an in-depth conversation with TrainerRoad CEO Chad Timmerman about altitude acclimation, and talk about how you should spend your days before the race. Don't miss it!…

2020 wasn't easy for anyone, but it may have been just a hair more difficult for Life Time President of Events and Media, Kimo Seymour. In addition to the normal challenges that come with the Leadville 100, there was the massive registration deferral issue. On top of that was the pandemic. And on top of THAT was a very serious illness that Kimo is still recovering from. It's enough to make you think about what's important. We talk about all that, plus new events and the future of the Leadville 100, in this can't-miss episode.…
