In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. With the “Me Too” movement a lot of things were unearthed. Things that many women have been just dealing with for years...and some men as well. Sure there was training out there from or HR partners. Some of it was enlightening, much of it online and an even greater portion of it unmemorable. There is no wonder why this did not have the intended impact on the workplace. With any behavior change there must be understanding, accountability and consequences. I feel comfortable in saying that this has been lacking in many workplaces which is why we have gotten to this place of “Me Too and “Times Up”. Taryn is a professional that specializes in building communication programs around workplace harassment. It is not as simple as “he said, she said,” there are layers to this thing and we are going to talk about them today! You can learn more about Taryn at: www.empowerbehavioralservices.com

Fact, if you have a business that can’t run without you all you have is a job. Ha! The first time I heard that, it was a revelation! Truth of the matter is if you are a business owner you know the peril between working in the business and working on the business. My guest today is passionate about this topic and helping business owners understand how to determine the value of their business so they can learn to work more strategically to build a business that is not only valuable to them but to potential investors or buyers. From the title of this show you can already tell my guest is all in! Stephanie is a ball of energy, full of wisdom, straight talk and inspiration! She believes it takes more than leaning into something to make it happen. She uses the analogy of jumping into the deep end of the pool. Before you jump there is trepidation, intimidation, fear, etc. but then you take the leap and what happens? Well, if you surrender to the universal flow and fully commit to the plunge you will float to the top eventually, with what appears to be little to no effort. It is the same way in our lives. Sometimes there is more angst thinking about risk then actually taking the risk. There are two things that can happen, success or failure, and failure is subjective. There is always a lesson in the failure that helps us push forward, rise up and operate at higher levels. Today, we jump in folks! You don’t need a life vest, you have everything you need to rise to the top!…
