The years 2011 to 2023 reveal societal unease as the fabric of the United States is stretched due to racial tensions, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the attack on the U. S. Capitol. It is also a time when the first African American presidency comes to an end, and later, an Alpha Kappa Alpha Woman becomes Vice President. As the U.S. grapples with the deadly 911 attacks and the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, a sense of hope comes from the election of the first African American president: Barack Obama.
As Nelson Mandela becomes South Africa’s first Black president and as new and innovative technologies become available to the masses in the United States, Xi Omega Chapter holds math and science summer camps for area youngsters.
The United States contends with a recession and HIV/AIDS becomes the number one global threat to public health. In Washington, DC, the women of Xi Omega Chapter register voters and march on the South African Embassy to protest apartheid.
As the Watergate scandal engulfs the nation, the women of Xi Omega Chapter also focus on summer programs for youth, enhanced community service, and expanding the sisterhood by welcoming new chapters throughout the city.
