- In the Travel News, Mexico and the U.K. are creating new junk fees to trap travelers; and Delta confirms what top level frequent flyers already know, airlines are selling a much higher percentage of first class seats these days (meaning fewer complimentary upgrades for those top tier travelers).
- TSA officials at Sacramento International have shared a few tips for holiday travel. The most important is, make sure your bag is empty when you start to pack. Seems simple, but when someone has a prohibited item in their bag, the answer is always “I didn’t know that was in there.” Check your bag before you pack it.
- The mailbag is full of your questions and our answers. There were so many questions, we are offering an extended mailbag section in the back half of the program.

Listen Now On the Saturday, February 8th edition of the Travel Guys… In the Travel News , Delta Airlines is partnering with Draft Kings and You Tube to offer in flight gaming, coming soon to a flight near you. Here’s a thought: Canadians spend more money in our country as tourists than travelers from ANY OTHER DESTINATION; and now they are talking seriously about cutting back on travel to their previously friendly neighbor as the result of tariff talks. American Airlines is rumored to be on the verge of a crackdown on carry-on bags. You know, the ones that are WAY too big to meet the sizing requirement and take up a lot of overhead bin space. Yeah, THOSE bags. This may not have a pretty ending. More in our Smarter Traveler segment. Our friend Ned Levi from Travelers United joins us to share his tips about picking a cabin on a cruise ship. It’s one of our most informative interviews of all time, as Ned talks about inside vs. outside, protecting yourself from motion sickness, noise on board and all sorts of things a veteran cruiser like Ned can share to help you select your cabin. Tom gets Mark to share his thoughts on a variety of travel questions , everything from the impact of tariffs to some of his favorite haunts. Listen Now On the Saturday, February 1st edition of the Travel Guys… In the Travel News , Sacramento International had over 13.6 million passengers pass through the airport in 2024, a new record; and Spirit Airlines says no, at least initially to another merger offer from Spirit. In our Smarter Traveler segment, we report that the “hard deadline” for the REAL ID for travelers of May 7, isn’t really. It’s a soft deadline, and you will be warned by TSA you only have until May 7, 2027 to get your REAL ID. Airline lounge membership generally comes at a cost. A fee, an upscale credit card you pay for, there is a dollar amount attached. Some travelers love the lounges, some don’t. Mark and Reporter Clayton Whitehead have a “discussion” about lounges. Clayton loves ’em, Mark not so much. Point/Counterpoint. Rick Steves was in town for a KVIE function last week, and we got a chance to talk a little about the upcoming year with a true travel guru. Listen Now On the Saturday, January 25th edition of the Travel Guys… In the Travel News , Marriott is experimenting with letting people pass on housekeeping and save on their hotel rooms – but Mark says it’s a trap, to let the hotel chain ultimately charge extra for housekeeping services. Plus, there’s the story of the young man who tuned a grand piano on the concourse in Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Truly, it’s one of the best travel stories ever ( see link to You Tube video here ). In our Smarter Traveler segment, Apple Air Tags are the subject. Maybe you already use them, or another brand like Tile Tags. If not, we suggest you should consider them. We talk about some of the many Internet travel scams , and some basic rules to follow to avoid being a victim. The crooks cast a wide net, but following a few basics can keep you out of harms way a lot of the time. Our guest star is Annie Fitzsimmons and her book is 100 Hotels of a Lifetime . Listen Now On the Saturday, December 28th edition of The Travel Guys… In the Travel News, the FAA has the results of the Southwest Airlines safety audit, and wildlife is dying out on Catalina island…without any concern from local residents. The Canadian Transportation Agency, which regulates airlines, has a proposal to make airlines more responsible for delays north of the border. They are actually more expansive than EU Rule 261, which protect passengers in the event of long delays or cancellations. If something like that comes to Canada, is it possible protections for U.S. passengers could be coming? Mileage and Mattress runs have been around as Frequent Flyer Program have existed. What are they and exactly why are they top of mind for many road warriors this time of year? For many years, European flyers have benefited from a plan which gives them refunds (EU Regulation 261) when an airline has a huge delay or cancels a flight (under certain conditions). It holds the airlines accountable when they are responsible. Now, the departing Biden administration has suggested a similar system in the U.S. We’ll talk about the concept. But know this – the airlines are already against it . What if you had two or three small children and wanted to explore the planet? That’s exactly what Jessica Gee and her husband did. Then she wrote a book. Stories of traveling with kiddos and tips on how to survive the effort highlight our interview with Jessica.
