By far the most innovation in our hobby right now is coming from the FMDX.org open source project, which includes the fantastic firmware improvements for the TEF6686 portable and the FM DX Webserver. There's now 157 active servers worldwide, including hotspots in Europe, Australia, and emerging regions like India and Chile. The effort is pulling in a noticeably youthful community of VHF DX'ers. In the latest episode of the VHF DX Podcast, Bryce and Nick spoke to one of the driving forces behind it all, Marek Farkaš, aka Noobish! The Fall 2023 Tropospheric Ducting season in Eastern North America has been drawing rave reviews, and Bryce and Nick reconvened in Troptober, if you will, to talk about it, and then, play many different audio highlights from the activity. Emergency Pod: Recapping the historic August 2023 Tropo with Matt Sittel 1:30:20

When history is made, we have to pod about it! And Bryce and Nick returned to recap the Tropocalypse of 2023, one of the largest tropo events ever recorded in North America, from August 19-24. We highlighted several outstanding reports, including from Chris Lucas, Rob Ross, Andrew Knafel, Greg Coniglio, Dave Nieman, Chris Kadlec, Bill Hepburn, Tim Land, and the magical Marble, NC autologger. Then, we spoke at length with Matt Sittel of Manhattan, KS, who had some of the most impressive logs of the event, as far east as London, ON, Grove City, PA, and Roanoke, VA. Hear Matt give outstanding insight into his receptions, how he slept right through the Roanoke tropo, and how 87.7 MeTV FM Chicago became his work from home soundtrack. Matt is a degreed meteorologist and works as the Assistant State Climatologist at Kansas State University. He gave us some great meteorological background for the event, including how watching the dew points climb made a difference, particularly for particularly noteworthy logs he had into Colorado and Wyoming! It’s the middle of summer and the middle of E-Skip season, and Bryce and Nick returned for a special episode of the VHF DX Podcast, as they podcasted live from Bryce’s QTH in Mashpee, MA on Cape Cod. While the promised Trans-Atlantic E-Skip did not ensue during Nick’s visit, Bryce and Nick collaborated for a spirited episode. The two discussed notable recent DX loggings, including the Azores to the Northern US E-Skip event on June 24 that Bryce and at least 5 other DX’ers, from Ontario to Massachusetts, experienced. Larry Horlick, VO1FOG, in Newfoundland, continues to also have much success with Trans-Atlantic FM E-Skip. He had a banner month of June, notching new countries in England, France, and the Canary Islands, and had a tremendous opening on June 23, that began with tremendous signals from Portugal and Spain, many exceeding 3500 km, that you can see and hear in this Twitter clip: https://twitter.com/vo1fog/status/1672416588362919945?s=61&t=CZ8HFZ50rmkANuZ1dvNcsQ They remembered a DX legend in Bob Cooper, recounting some of his notable logging and achievements in the hobby, and then saluted several DXers with new autologgers and/or setups, ranging from Alberta to Greenland! The boys are back in town! We took the winter off, but Bryce & Nick returned at the end of March to discuss any notable DX happenings in the cold season in the northern hemisphere, and mainly just extol the virtues of Daylight Saving Time. Our special guest this episode was veteran North American FM and TV DXer Frank Merrill. Frank's first TV DX memories occurred in the 1950s, and he took us from his start in Michigan, to his location to Toledo, to the magical location of Macomb, IL, where he has been DX'ing since 1985. We discussed some of his best catches, including the Thanksgiving and Christmas openings in 1986, how we insist he has logged the lower 48 on FM, and his affinity for the Bolin phase box. Frank has now permanently settled in Chicago. Finally, both Bryce and Nick provided clips in the Audio Highlights section of some of their best FM DX in their careers. On this November episode of the VHF DX podcast, Bryce and Nick briefly recap some rather interesting October tropo DX conditions in November. Then, they turn their attention to our very special guest, William (Bill) Hepburn. If you've spent any amount of time DX'ing in the past two decades, you undoubtedly know Bill's name. Bill takes us through his career path in meteorology, including discussing the noted parallels in weather and radio propagation. In the 1980s, Bill spent time as a weather observer stationed in Nunavut, and we discuss E-Skip on FM he was able to catch while located at Coral Harbour, in the southern part of Nunavut. Four separate audio selections of FM receptions captured by in Coral Harbour are featured from the 1984 season. Bryce and Nick also discuss with Bill his time as a DX'er from the Greater Toronto area, including at his current DX QTH in Grimsby. Finally, Bill is surely best known and revered in the DX community for his daily Tropospheric Ducting Forecasts, available at his website, https://dxinfocentre.com/ , which we highly encourage you to check out for his forecasts and other tremendously helpful DX aids. Bryce and Nick return to put a likely cap on the 2022 DX season, at least as it pertains to Sporadic-E. We asked you, our beloved listeners, to send in audio clips of your best DX from this past year, and you delivered. Bryce has tirelessly put together a compilation of clips that you can hear beginning at the 54:13 mark in the podcast. This will be the first episode in a two part series!
