Want to shop for groceries at Costco? Turns out, you don’t actually need a membership. An avid discount warehouse shopper created a value-sized stir on social media explaining how she snapped up some favorite items at the store without paying the $60 annual membership — and apparently, it’s as easy as tapping a few buttons on an app. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Thursday, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks and two other terrorists being held on Guantánamo Bay will be spared the death penalty under a deal with prosecutors. Meanwhile, the grieving families of the heroic first responders killed in the Sept. 11 attacks slammed a plea deal struck that allows three alleged terrorists — including accused mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammad — to avoid the death penalty. In other news, thousands of marijuana shops boldly opened without a license in New York City after the state legalized recreational use of the drug, but after more than a year of lax enforcement, new state rules are finally allowing officials to padlock their doors. And overseas, Hamas’ top political leader was killed Wednesday by a predawn airstrike in the Iranian capital, Iran and the militant group said, blaming Israel for a shock assassination that risked escalating into an all-out regional war. Iran’s supreme leader vowed revenge against Israel.
