Artificial intelligence is evolving at an unprecedented pace—what does that mean for the future of technology, venture capital, business, and even our understanding of ourselves? Award-winning journalist and writer Anil Ananthaswamy joins us for our latest episode to discuss his latest book Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math Behind Modern AI . Anil helps us explore the journey and many breakthroughs that have propelled machine learning from simple perceptrons to the sophisticated algorithms shaping today’s AI revolution, powering GPT and other models. The discussion aims to demystify some of the underlying mathematical concepts that power modern machine learning, to help everyone grasp this technology impacting our lives–even if your last math class was in high school. Anil walks us through the power of scaling laws, the shift from training to inference optimization, and the debate among AI’s pioneers about the road to AGI—should we be concerned, or are we still missing key pieces of the puzzle? The conversation also delves into AI’s philosophical implications—could understanding how machines learn help us better understand ourselves? And what challenges remain before AI systems can truly operate with agency? If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform. Singer-songwriter Josh Stirm of The Juniper Berries joins me for a conversation about our recent collaboration to create the soundtrack for my new documentary, his work on the band's second album, and what the future holds for us both. Check out Josh's new single, available on July 14th: https://show.co/ckKbEaw Sailor Boy: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJoyQQFm28pUlw9JCZEBP3w?…
In this episode, we get a little experimental. I take the show outdoors with my good friend and coworker Tripp White to see how the conversation is stimulated by being out under the sun. In a lovely park up in Ashland's southern hills, we talk about what it's like to nude art model, go back and forth about our various creative projects, and jabber about time management and growth while in college, why we make things, using mushrooms to escape bad mental conditioning, becoming your truer self, and finding work that is relevant to you. It's a pretty all over the place but fun to reflect on kind of episode. Check it out! Fair warning, there is a little bit of wind right at the start, causing a bit of whooshing. The problem does not persist.…
In this very special edition of The ShoeBox Show, Steven Papale and I are privileged enough to have the opportunity to speak with two Mormon Missionaries we have befriended. They were very willing to share their thinking on several subjects, and in this conversation, we discuss possibilities of extraterrestrial life, the likelihood of Jesus Christ returning in the form of artificial intelligence, and my pet theory that religious experiences, like that of Joseph Smith, can be attributed to the use of potent psychedelics. It's a really interesting conversation. Tune in!…
In this episode, I have the privilege of having my good friend and documentary co-star Louis Bengtson on the show. This was recorded just after our return from the Alvord Desert, where we shot our second movie together. In this episode we discuss a wide array of topics, from the newly finished "The Cornucopia Project" to hijinks from the past. Enjoy!…
In this episode, we are joined by Brandon Kelsy, Steven Papale's long-time friend from back in Humboldt County. Brandon is a cross country runner and EMDA major, joining us for an all over the place conversation about the inherent weirdness of religion, favorite spots for various activities, and, of course, some gossip. Created by Keegan Van Hook, featuring Steven Papale, Sydney Cook, Kenny Karter, and Brandon Kelsy.…
In this episode we talk to Josh Stirm of The Juniper Berries about being in one of Ashland's most popular local bands, discuss experiences with psychedelics, and at the end, Josh and Steven play a few tunes. This was a really fun episode to make, and I think we will be having Josh back on the show again soon. Welcome to The ShoeBox Show! This week we discuss a man who can inhale hotdogs, fucked up injuries, the Holy Grail, the pets of evil men, and sexual predators online. Welcome to The ShoeBox Show! Created by Keegan Van Hook, featuring Patrick Setty and Steven Papale, Kenny Karter, and Sydney Cook. Out first installment. A bit rusty out of the gates. We talk about antics from the old days, our thoughts on "Murder Mountain," alternative methods for warfare, and comment on the current nature of society to foster "echo chambers" in which people live. I promise the real thing is not as well thought out as this description. I hope you enjoy! Sailor Boy (main channel): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJoy...…
