So you want to start a podcast. Whether you’ve always wanted to or it’s a new interest, you know you need the best podcast equipment to record the high-quality show you’re envisioning. But we also understand you don’t necessarily want to break the bank if you don’t have to either. Don’t worry, John Luckenbaugh, the Head Audio Engineer and Owner of Q’d Up has got you covered with the 5 essential pieces of podcast equipment you need.

Listen as John breaks down the podcasting equipment you need to get started:

Headphones (2:16)

Before you record anything, you have to be able to listen. John discusses the important role headphones play in your podcast equipment list and what he personally uses in-studio and on location.

Podcast microphone (3:35)

Microphone cable (5:16)

You need a way to get that new microphone plugged in to record, right!? John breaks down which type of cable you should be looking at and why it can have a pretty big impact on your final sound.

Microphone stand (6:51)

While you can hold the microphone with your hand, it can be a little tricky to get a consistently good recording that way. As your arms move, the microphone moves closer and further from your mouth. But do you really need to drop hundreds on a microphone stand? Not at all and John has two great options, depending on your budget and how you want to mount it.

Audio interface / Recorder (7:45)

We’re finally ready to start recording but how do you capture that magic in the first place? You can either record it directly into a recording device or use an audio interface to connect it to your computer. John gives his two picks, including a great all-in-one option.
