Chances are, you have at least one social media profile for your podcast. Whether that’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, or any number of social media platforms; podcasters have been led to believe simply being on social media will cure all that ails us in podcast marketing. But it’s not really that simple, and in my opinion, podcasting’s unrequited love of social media is often to blame when a show podfades.

So then what is social media actually good for? Should you be spending any time on your podcast’s social media presence? Do you even need a social media account for your podcast in the first place? On this episode of the Q’d Up Podcast on Podcasting, let’s break down how useful social media can be for your podcast and what you can do right now to improve your social media marketing results.

Listen as Matt discusses podcast marketing with social media:

Introduction (0:29)

You likely already have at least one social media profile for your podcast and if you’re like most podcasters, you’re frustrated with the lack of results.

The problem with social media for podcasts (1:32)

Despite every marketing and business guru telling you social media is where all your clients or users are at, it’s not the entire truth. Unfortunately, too many podcasters have either received that terrible advice or have gotten it into their heads that social media is how they can grow their audiences easily. When it doesn’t pan out, they turn to other gimmicks to inflate their following and ultimately podfade away.

Social media uses (2:49)

While there are many uses for social media as just a normal person, you have to think of it differently for businesses and, like it or not, your podcast IS your business. There are really only three main uses for social media for a business and you need to carefully think about the value each brings to your podcast.

Social media uses: Audience engagement (3:26)

The thing social media nails every single time is engagement. No matter the topic, people are ultimately on social media to engage with others. For your podcast, that means your biggest fans want to talk with you and other fans about your podcast. Luckily for you, the intimacy that podcasting has plays perfectly with the sense of community social media brings to the table, so use that to your advantage.

Social media uses: Establishing authority (4:39)

You might not think your podcast allows you to establish authority but you absolutely can. And the best way to gain new followers is to flex that authority a bit on social media. I give some real-world examples of ways different podcasts can establish their authority on social media and boost your podcast’s discoverability.

Social media uses: Discoverability and brand awareness (5:35)

If you do the first two things well enough, you’ll be gaining new followers regularly and turning your already-existing supporters into fanatics. It’s a roundabout way to podcast discoverability but it’s the best way to do it successfully and sustainably.
