PART 2:

In part two (originally aired on YouTube), Tim and Ed discuss critical race theory (CRT) and its relevance to the church. Ed explains that he wrote his book, 'Untangling Critical Race Theory,' to provide a more accurate understanding of CRT and its potential benefits for Christians. They discuss the five tenets of CRT, which focus on the ongoing racial disparities and inequalities in American society. They also explore the resistance and politicization of CRT, as well as the need for Christians to engage in conversations about race and justice. In this part of the conversation, Tim and Ed discuss their views on the white evangelical structures and systems. Tim expresses his belief that these structures are deeply flawed and soaked in racist ideology, and he sees little hope for reforming them. He suggests that the church can move forward by dismantling these structures and rethinking what it means to love God and love your neighbor in community. Ed, on the other hand, acknowledges the flaws in these systems but believes in holding them accountable and working towards a better way forward. He emphasizes the importance of provoking people to see a different way of doing things and planting seeds for change.

Takeaways

  • Critical race theory (CRT) is a framework that examines the ongoing racial disparities and inequalities in American society.
  • CRT seeks to reveal and confront how dominant culture racial power works through laws, policies, and patterns to maintain a racial hierarchy.
  • The resistance and politicization of CRT have led to misconceptions and misunderstandings about its purpose and potential benefits.
  • Christians should engage in conversations about race and justice, centering the voices and experiences of marginalized communities. The white evangelical structures and systems are deeply flawed and soaked in racist ideology.
  • Tim believes that these structures are not salvageable and should be dismantled, while Ed believes in holding them accountable and working towards a better way forward.
  • Both Tim and Ed emphasize the importance of provoking people to see a different way of doing things and planting seeds for change.
  • They agree that the church can move forward by rethinking what it means to love God and love your neighbor in community.
