We're going to hear two major forces that shaped the world of jazz. Fletcher Hamilton Henderson was a pianist, bandleader, arranger and composer, important in the development of big band jazz and swing music. Henderson was one of the most prolific black musical arrangers and, along with Duke Ellington, is considered one of the most influential bandleaders in jazz history. He helped bridge the gap between the Dixieland and the swing eras, attracting new young talent to the genre. Fletcher Henderson and his band perform on the radio show Jubilee in 1945. "Dizzy" Gillespie was a jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer. Gillespie became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz in the 1940s and 1950s, becoming one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time". You will hear him perform on the show, This Is Jazz in 1960.
