In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. So ya boy was out of town all last week, and when I got back, I had no desire to coordinate with a guest. So as promised, I came back with another episode with no guest. We talk, Cardi B's Record breaking rodeo performance, and Mariah Carey's concert in Houston the same night. We ventured off into the level of difficulty involved in being a legacy act still putting out new music that they want to tour, while the OG audience wants the classics. We talk my favorite places to perform, as well as my least favorite places. Of course we couldn't go without speaking on Jussie Smollett and Robert Sylvester the Molester Kelly. We dip into Robert Kraft getting his old rocks off at a local massage parlor, and the fights coming up. A WHOOOOLE bunch of other stuff. Buckle up... its gonna be a long episode.…
My friends are the reason I started this podcast. I have interesting friends who are interesting for various reasons. Either because of the great things they do that are public, or the way they live, and how they can inspire thought and action in others. Today I sit with my friend, AJ Costa. This guy has been instrumental in my life in a lot of ways, but his story is even more layered. This is a conversation we'd have off of the mic, anyway, so it was just natural. We talk about his childhood, dealing with the reality of an incarcerated father, how it effected him, and what their relationship is today. We take a dive into what it was like learning that his mother was a member of the LGBTQ community, and how growing up with 2 mothers shaped his mind (spoiler alert: its not as much a negative dynamic as every ignorant human would have you believe). We talk a bit about his job as a cigar salesman for Ventura Cigars, the culture of cigars, and some of its misconceptions. We generally just check in with each other about how things are going, where we are in life, and how we continue to move forward. This is one of the people I look to, to keep me leveled. We all could use and AJ in our lives. Follow him on EVERYTHING: @mrajcosta…
This week's episode was all about BALANCE. I was joined by the beautiful and talented Crystal Cole. Crystal is a Teacher and GroupX Cycling instructor who lit up the room with her big personality, and thoughts on so many different things. We begin with her blog centered around Love, Hair, Traveling, and Fitness. (check out realcoleworld.com). We discuss the things she's experienced on past dates, past relationships, and why she chooses to blog about these experiences. She gets personal as she speaks about her time in an abusive relationship and what the last straw was for her. We then talk about the thing that saved her life, which was FITNESS. Her insight, and honesty is truly something to behold on this episode. She even decided to grill ME a bit. Women from all over can relate to her story, I'v…
Today's guest is my good friend Alicia Tilman AKA Awkward Yoga girl! she's absolutely one of the best people in the universe. In case you didn't know by her name, she's a yoga teacher, so of course we dive into her life a bit! We talk her beginnings in the world of yoga, and how its helped her over the years (me as well). We get into the misconceptions of the name "trap yoga' and how it effects the way people tend to diminish her formal yoga education because of it. We discuss the difficulties of being a black woman in the yoga/fitness industry, how representation in that field is important, and why what she does matters SO much. She's helped me in ways I never would have imagined and I really love this chick. If you don't know her YOU WILL TOO when this is over! Also, I throw in a totally unrelated story about Singer/ songwriter, Bilal. Grant Tucker is one of the cities brightest minds when it comes to marketing, design, creative direction. He hasn't even touched 30 yet and his journey has been a winding road, much like myself. Today I chop it up with my friend about his idea for the design of my "Define Love" album cover, his approach to creating content for products we see every single day. people stealing his creative style, how he started his path into what he does now, and more. He's also the only Rams fan I know, so we had to get his pick (spoiler: it wasn't the rams lol), also his take on black people and brunch. ENJOY! and follow @scknows on everything lol…
Both possible guests bailed on me, so here I am... with my producer Ryan Rockett and we talk about just about everything. I admittedly don't like to just get on the mic and talk about me, which is why I like having guests, so if you share in that sentiment, this one might not be the one for you lol. I give my playoff picks (we recorded Saturday and I was almost right but the refs happened), I give my Broner/Pacquaio Pick, we talk Soulja Boy more than I cared to, R Kelly and the awful life he leads, I give a few stories about my experience as a collaborator and friend of Brad Jordan aka Scarface... and a whole lot more... this is a long one folks... so here we go.…

Then we dive into the early days of the legendary Screwed Up Clique. He talks about some of his fondest memories of that time with guys like the Late DJ Screw, and Big Moe. He breaks down the culture and lineage of lean sippers and where it is now. We talk, Pimp C, what parts of the game made him bitter for a moment, Almost mobbing on Diddy at a Biggie concert lol, and a whoooooole lot more. It was a pleasure. Today we sit down with one of the most Interesting minds I've come across in a long time. Arian Foster was gracious enough to carve out time in his day between being a family man, going back to school, and trying to get back in shape. He painstakingly indulges my burning questions about his football career and upbringing in the mean streets of Albuquerque, NM, talks about his past as a bit of a knucklehead, growing up muslim, his transition into atheism, his high regard for science and physics, some of the best words of encouragement he's gotten from respected figures, and where football lies in his list of things he holds dear to him (spoiler: its pretty low). We dive into his upcoming hip hop album entitled Flamingo and Koval, his love for producing beats, and writing bars, the things he's learned about the industry, we send a message to Jim Carey and soooo much more. follow @arianfoster on twitter and ig subscribe to the Now What Podcast follow me: IG: iamjackfreeman twitter: _jackfreeman Follow: 75thncanalco on ig and twitter follow: djprolyfic on ig and twitter…
