Words matter to leaders. And this episode reveals why. It begins with Jonathan realizing what it means to “enleaven” others. Although this word isn’t in the dictionary – yet – it makes a huge difference on the willingness and ability of others to help ignite your meaningful change. And then Jonathan was asked to express his vision. By now, more than 30 questions in since he started to illuminate it, finding the words to describe it could have been relatively easy. Having already tossed around some of the words and phrases, he just needed to retrieve them. But just like most leaders I’ve worked with, this proved to be no easy task. The first words that came out were features and characteristics. There was nothing to bind them. So Jonathan retreated to put pen to paper. Fifteen minutes later, he emerged with a symphony of words. More than a vision statement, it was speechcraft at its finest – testament to his former life as a professional speechwriter. Music to the ears. But did it answer this card’s question? Did he express his vision so it matters to others, and not just to him? It certainly provoked a lot of different feelings from those in the room. And not all were positive. That means there’s a risk that the vision so meaningful to him could turn others off, making it harder to find and keep those who could help ignite it. Words do matter. Jonathan has been long conscious of the importance of words. As the chief speech writer to the former President of the European Union, he even made his living by them. Nevertheless, this conversation heightened his awareness of the critical need to choose words wisely and precisely. He sees that the words that matter most to him, and that are central to his vision, could distract or even repel others. Sacred Dignity. Diversity. Truth. He doesn’t want to seem like a pious, moral authority. So he’s got to convey the value of pursuing truth together, and emphasize the “we” over “I”. Expressing your vision as a leader is a little like flying an airplane. You have to stay at the optimal altitude – not too high and not too low – and be able to manage any and all turbulence. The turbulence for a leader is the concerns others have about your vision. Whether vocal or silent, those concerns prevent them from listening and acting on your vision. So you need to be able to say whatever it is that resolves them. In this conversation, Jonathan saw that he can’t just express his vision as a list. It’s actually a “sphere” in which different ideas exist in tension with each other: It’s about home but not refuge. There’s diversity among us and within us but it’s understandable to be wary of strangers. We need the financial means to live but we wake up first and foremost as humans, not job seekers. And the need for truth is ever-present. Right down to the need to tell the truth about our past. Jonathan saw how to anticipate and respond to a number of concerns his vision may evoke. But he also sees he will have to address other concerns that surface in real-time conversations. There is a lot of truth though in his declaration that, “We are all united in our need for home.” That may be enough for some to be open to listening to his vision of a shared home. This question gets to the heart of another prime reason why a leader’s meaningful change fails to ignite. Despite the fact that the question serves to surface the concerns others may have about his vision, Jonathan begins to answer by listing why it matters. And yes, it does. But at this point, maybe it only matters to him. This another of the Amplify questions that is deliberately designed to help him express his vision in the way that matters to them too as they’re the ones who can help him realize it. Unless leaders are aware of the concerns, and can address and ideally resolve them, others will not embrace the vision. They’ll resist. It may look like they’re listening but they could have well tuned out. And that may not be evident until you see that they fail to act on what you’ve said. Surfacing concerns is part of what I call the “due diligence” that is so vital to a leader’s ability to engage, align and mobilize those who can help ignite the change. As I list in this conversation, there are many facets to consider. It may seem like a big investment of time and effort on the leader’s part. But the return can be invaluable as it identifies exactly what needs to be said in order for them to listen and respond in the ways that help realize the meaningful change.
