The City of Arlington was incorporated in 1903 and is situated in northern Snohomish County, about 40 miles north of Seattle and 10 miles north of Everett. The Stillaguamish River forks, where the City of Arlington is located. Prehistoric Coast Salish people, mostly from the Stillaguamish Tribe, used the river as a major travel route and stopped to camp at the forks as they traveled up and down it, following the plentiful fish runs. The area was known as Skabalko by the Stillaguamish.
A prospector's visit in 1851 marked the start of European settlers' exploration of the future Arlington area, and a U.S. Army road from modern-day Snohomish crossed the river just below the forks in 1856. Beginning in the mid-1880s, pioneers from the Marysville region traveled a rough wagon track that nearly followed the historic trail; some pioneers arrived by canoe.
