Many of us follow leadership wisdom that is passed down to us or that we have read and heard in management seminars of the past. Are they currently helping or hurting? Our research is showing that many are fueling drama instead of reducing it. This podcast discusses the top 7 deadly sins of the current leadership approach and what we can do to course-correct for a more peaceful workplace.

One of the most interesting parts of the work I do is that I get to hear many messages out there presented at conferences on how to lead teams. I also get to hear many strategies that leaders are trying and living by that they feel will get the best results. At Reality-Based Leadership we pride ourselves at taking each of those conventional wisdoms and testing them with the evidence in behavior economics, human behavior and the psychology.

Often times, many of the approaches we investigate are strategies that actually make being a leader tougher not easier. Many also allow colleagues to step down into a victim mindset instead of answering the call to greatness.

In this episode I cover the following deadly sins of conventional leadership wisdom that I am coming across during my speaking engagements and interactions with leaders across the country:

  1. Role TRUE of a leader - *hint - it is not to motivate and inspire others.
  2. Change at work is hard
  3. My opinion should count and I should be consulted on organizational decisions
  4. Leaders need to 'hold people accountable'
  5. Leaders must engage their people and make them happy at work
  6. Younger generation is impossible to lead
  7. People need to bring their whole self to work - we insist it be their most EVOLVED self instead.

Below are links to the FULL 30 MINUTE KEYNOTE of how Employee Engagement is Broken and How to Fix it. This explains our approach to current engagement philosophy and how we bring in filters of accountability to engage the right people on your teams.

Here is a link to a full keynote of mine on our Business Readiness philosophy. This is our modern and evolved take on how leaders can better lead their teams through change with shared accountability for the success of the change as a whole.

You can also listen to an amazing episode that dives deeper into the "Does my opinion actually count at work?" topic in this podcast that Cy Wakeman and I did a few months ago. Many have loved the fire in this episode!
