In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. Six months. It’s been almost six months since our last podcast. A lot has happened, and yes we have some bad news that you’ve probably already heard. On May 13th, 2010 Heroes was officially canceled by NBC. We’ve had two months to think about it, and finally Joe and I bring you our thoughts about the cancellation, we talk about what’s next not only for the folks at Heroes, but for ourselves as well. Also, Comic-Con is next week and if you’re going we definitely want to see you there. We hope you enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep106.mp3…
The Heroes season 4 finale “Brave New World” has come and gone, and the repercussions of what happened at the end of this episode have the potential to fundamentally change Heroes going forward. It’s safe to say Heroes will never be the same again. Joe and I talk about how this is a good thing, and about what we’d like to see happen on the next season of Heroes. Granted, there’s one big elephant in the room… What will NBC do? Enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep105.mp3…
With only one more episode of Heroes left this season, “The Wall” was an episode that moved all of our characters into place for a very promising season finale next week. This week Joe and I discuss our thoughts about this episode, and how we think it will affect next week’s episode. We’ve also got lots of e-mail, and discussion about our upcoming Season 4 finale. Enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep104.mp3…
This week, due to insane scheduling conflicts, Joe and I decided to record this week’s 10th Wonder episode Monday night during our regularly scheduled live show. It’s a stripped down show this week, but don’t fret, we still managed to pack in more than an hour’s worth of discussion about this week’s episode, responded to […] http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep103.mp3…
We’re back this week to talk about the very solid Heroes episode “Pass/Fail” We liked a lot of what we say this past week, three great stories, and the sense that things are starting to really make a push for the events of our season finale episode. Join us as we talk about Claire & Sylar’s encounter, Samuel’s shattered expectations for Vanessa, and Hiro’s epic battle within his own consciousness. Enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep102.mp3…
We’re back this week to talk about the latest Heroes episode “Close To You” an episode that seemed to dwell specifically on Noah’s relationship with claire, while drawing a paralell with several of the ongoing storylines and asking the question, “How do you protect someone without losing their trust?” We enjoyed this episode of Heroes, and we’ll hope you’ll enjoy our discussion! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep101.mp3…
Can you believe it? We’re finally at 100 episodes. There’s no better way to celebrate it than to talk about two of the latest Heroes episodes at the same time! We’ve got tons of news, discussion, e-mails, and voicemails this week on this milestone of an episode. We hope you all enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep100.mp3…
Heroes is now more than halfway done with its 4th season! This mid-season finale episode packed in quite a few twists and turns that had us talking about tons of new theories this week on the show. More light was shed on Samuel’s plans What’s next for Peter? Sylar? What about Claire? Discussion about these topics and more in this weeks episode. Enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep99.mp3…
Happy Thanksgiving! This week’s Heroes episode was a festive holiday themed one, that managed to carry along with it some pretty big reveals. Join us this week as we discuss the episode, and we try to guess what we might be in store for during next week’s mid-season finale. Enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep98.mp3…
Seven. Count them. Seven topics total in this week’s 10th Wonder Podcast. We were more than blown away by this week’s episode both by it’s intensity, scope, and the sheer amount of information that was revealed to us that lead us all the way back to talking about Season 3’s “1961? in our discussion. http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep97.mp3…
In this week’s podcast Joe and I talk about “Shadowboxing” a deceptively strong episode that featured lots of great twists and turns and ended with Matt Parkman making a huge sacrifice to rid the world of Sylar. We’ve got lots of new theories and questions to cover this week, as well as a bone to […] http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep96.mp3…
This week’s Heroes episode took us all the way back to Midland, Texas moments before Charlie Andrews was killed by Sylar, known only to us then as the Brain Man, a shadowy figure who was hunting down and killing people with special abilities. Hiro’s quest to “Save Charlie” took a few surprising twists and turns and Joe and I talk about what we can expect to see going forward, as well as our impressions of the episode. Enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep95.mp3…
This week’s episode “Strange Attractors” was easily one of Mine and Joe’s favorite so far this season, lots of great new story developments on the surface and underneath for lots of our characters. This week we break down everything we can and how we think the events of “Strange Attractors” will effect the rest of the season. Enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep94.mp3…
This week we talk about “Tabula Rasa” an episode that created a bit of confusion, and brought up a lot of questions, but overall was an episode we enjoyed. Samuel’s trying to shape and mold his very own version of Sylar. Noah helped someone with abilities, and therefore experienced his first step towards redemption, and Hiro’s mission last week was to help Emma accept her power, before he randomly teleports to Midland Texas 3 years ago to “Save Charlie” Enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep93.mp3…
Thanks for the patience this week, Joe and I have been super busy! You’ve still got time to listen to the podcast before Heroes starts, fast forward to our topics and get ready for Monday’s episode! This week we talk about all of the twists, turns and reveals that were thrown at us during “Hysterical Blindness” and how it sets up some exciting things going forward. Enjoy! http://media.libsyn.com/media/hancocklg/10w_ep92.mp3…
