Government spyware, once intended for serious criminals, is now widely misused against journalists and activists. Companies like NSO Group and Paragon sell sophisticated surveillance tools, which have been found on devices of non-targets, even in democratic countries. The latest case involves an Italian political consultant targeted by Paragon. Experts blame the payment structure, where governments pay based on the number of targets, for encouraging misuse. While some companies have cut ties and governments have launched investigations, the global spyware market remains a significant threat to democracy and privacy.
