We’re keeping our November Veteran’s Month going by welcoming Scott Fisher, a Marine Corps veteran, historian, and dedicated Maui community member to the podcast! Scott shares his personal experiences as a marine deployed at Guantanamo Bay, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Okinawa, then describes his oral history project collecting stories from Maui WWII veterans and their families. Scott provides a deep and multifaceted perspective on service and the importance of both community and preserving our history. This week on the Taking Care of Tutu Podcast, we are delighted to welcome Chelsea Fernandez, U.S. Army Veteran and tireless volunteer for veterans. Born on the Big Island, Chelsea moved to Maui after she returned from Iraq in 2005. Recognizing that many younger veterans—especially those from recent conflicts—weren’t aware of the resources available to them through the VA and other community organizations, Chelsea felt it was crucial to bridge this gap and provide support to veterans returning home. Chelsea noted that younger veterans often don’t identify as veterans because they don’t fit the traditional image of older veterans. She wanted to create a space where younger veterans could feel understood and supported by their peers. Chelsea founded Na Koa Kahiko Wahine, a women’s veterans group that celebrates its 10th year this year. The organization brings together women from various military eras, focusing on shared experiences and challenges that women face both in the military and when transitioning back to civilian life. The group offers a sense of camaraderie and support to women veterans, providing opportunities to connect and share experiences. Chelsea serves as president of the Maui County Veterans Council, which helps organize events to honor Veterans Day and Memorial Day and also supports other veteran organizations. She works with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and has served on the Governor's Advisory Board for the Office of Veterans Services. Her motivation stems from her grandfather's service in the Korean War. Earlier this year, Chelsea played a pivotal role in bringing us the Wall That Heals, in which a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was brought to the Big Island and Maui. She tells us all about how they got the wall here and how it was viewed by 13,000 people! Chelsea offers multiple avenues for veterans to connect with support groups, including through the Maui County Veterans email, the Office of Veteran Services, and the Student Veterans Lounge at the University of Hawaii Maui College. She encourages veterans to make the most of opportunities to meet others who share similar experiences. This week we welcome Pastor Bill Staton, a retired veteran and veterans’ services counselor on Maui, to the podcast. Originally, Bill’s job was helping veterans navigate the complex systems of veterans’ financial benefits. However, Bill quickly realized the need to advocate for the holistic needs of veterans returning from conflicts and their families. Bill talks about challenges faced by veterans, including an ingrained military culture of not complaining, which can make it difficult for many veterans to ask for help. We discuss how the perseverance of the Nisei veterans and their families reshaped perceptions of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Bill addresses the ongoing reluctance among Gulf War veterans to seek support. Bill breaks down the various benefits available to our veterans, including the important question of where to begin. We cover medical care through the Community-Based Outpatient Clinic, long term care, burial services, support groups, and education under the GI Bill.
