In TFC #06, Nate discusses weight and why it is important in winter. Tune in to learn how you can use weight to kicka** in the winter months. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:19 – Today’s topic: How to Use Weight in Fall & Winter 00:30 – Throughout the winter months there is not a whole lot of topwater activity 00:52 – Nymphing and fishing streamers are your best bet, right now 01:02 – Trout migrate into deep pools and pockets in the winter, thus your flies have to get down deep 01:18 – Use split shots, tungsten putty, heavier flies, or build a multi-fly rig to get down deep 01:30 – Reusable tungsten putty from Orvis is fantastic and doesn't leave a residue on your line 02:00 – Split shots are great because you can adjust the weight or your rig with ease. Plus, there is only so much weight you can tie onto a fly 02:28 – Joe Humphreys is a master of using split shots and will even store a handful in his mouth 02:55 – Go to TheFlyCrate.com/flies-weight-fly-fishing to read more about Tyler Tasci's article, "Weight, What? Yea it’s true, you’re not getting deep enough!" 03:30 – Take a look at the flow of the water and how deep it is to determine how much weight you'll need. Basically, eye-ball the weight needed 03:50 – If you are snagging on the bottom all the time, you have too much weight. If your flies are being swept downstream quickly, add more weight. 04:00 – Find that happy medium. Not too much weight but just enough. 04:04 – Don't be afraid to adjust your weight. 04:06 Every hole and riffle will need difficult amounts of weight because the speed of water flow and water depth will vary 04:45 – Go to TheFlyCrate.com/free-trout-flies to get your FREE barbless Euro Nymphing Assortment your first month when you join our Troutbum Monthly Fly Club plan.
