🍺 ZorFitness: 20 Yrs Of Binge Drinking. Sikhs & Alcohol. Transformation Story

Episode #26 of the Harbir Singh Podcast. Raj is an avid listener of this podcast and reached out following a previous episode with Barinder "Killa B" Singh, a commonwealth kickboxing champion who has overcome drug and alcohol addiction. I've known Raj for years and he has always been an honest and genuinely nice guy, I was surprised as anyone to hear of his 20 year battle with binge drinking and equally as inspired by it, considering how fit and healthy he is now. His story is a testament to fact that people can change and how it's never too late to turn your life around. Raj is now paying it forward and helping other people transform their lives and become healthier.

Topics discussed...

🍺 How alcohol has become embedded in Sikhs - regardless of the fact that it is forbidden in the Sikh faith, theirs no escaping the fact that the majority of the Sikhs (people born into the Sikh faith) binge drink.

🍺 Risky behaviors such as fights, marriage problems, health issues, and hangovers associated with binge drinking.

🍺 How many Sikhs have formed the habit of drinking as a release from the stresses and strains of life and how it potentially robs us of the opportunity to find other healthier releases from our problems such as friendships, sport, and exercise.

🍺Escapism and how ANYONE of us of potentially 2 or 3 bad decisions away from alcohol dependency = A. Alcohol is usually easily accessible B. It's usually acceptable in mainstream Sikh families C. It's normalized behavior as it's part of most socializing events and kids grow up seeing their elders drinking. D. Alcohol is usually portrayed as positive behavior in TV and movies and this has an effect on our subconscious. E. Sikhs will likely have members of their extended family/immediate family or friends who drink and so exposure to drinking culture may be present and some people may see how others use alcohol to bury their issues (modeled behavior).

🍺 The power of sangat / the company we keep.

Personally, I witnessed violence, conflict, and other distressing incidents when I was young. I didn't want these in my life and alcohol always seemed like the culprit. I think witnessing these incidents put me off, that along with getting into training and above all, god grace saved me from suffering the same fate during my formative years.

Having worked in Southall and Slough for the last 11 years, I have met a handful of people who have been able to turn their life around and change their habits, Raj is one of these remarkable and blessed individuals.
