During the Cold War, isolation experiments became something of a national obsession – for some it was a way of tapping the unconscious, for others, if offered a means for brainwashing, and of others still, a testing ground for the challenges of space. Historian Jeffery Mathias talks about scientific experiments in isolation during the Cold War. Mathias is the author of the Ph.D dissertation, “An Empire of Solitude: Isolation and the Cold War Sciences of the Mind.” He is also the author of the 2021 essay “American Solitude.”
