Hilde Mosse comes from one of the wealthiest families in Berlin and stands to inherit an enormous fortune. But she longs for something more meaningful than the luxurious lifestyle her family provides. So Hilde decides to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. As the Nazis take power in Germany and the Mosse family is forced to flee, Dr. Hilde Mosse lands in New York having nearly lost everything.. She finds her calling treating the mental health of Black youth – and the symptoms of a racist system. In addition to photographs, school records, and correspondence spanning Hilde Mosse’s entire lifetime, the Mosse Family Collection in the LBI Archives includes the diaries she kept between 1928 and 1934, from the ages of 16-22. Our podcast is about the roles women play in Science Fiction and how they are portrayed. We will be discussing Science Fiction film and literature through a feminist lens with a concentration on the women of color. We chose this topic because we are the only women in our class. Also after watching The Forbidden Planet, we shared strong thoughts on how “Alta” was being portrayed in the film. We hope to shed more light to the evolution of women through the years in science fiction, as characters and writers, and discuss further the roles these women played in their stories.

Our final episode focused on the representation and portrayal of women in science fiction films. We began our discussion with the first film we watched in class, Forbidden Planet, and how Alta, the only woman on the planet, interacted with the men in the film. We then moved on to different films in the 20th and then 21st centuries, mainly focusing on the diversity of women in films especially in terms of race and sexuality.…
In our second episode we discuss a brief, somewhat chronological order of women in the realm of science fiction as both writers and and fans. We talk about how the science fiction field is mainly male dominated but over time women have been making a stance and there many great female authors who have been recognized for their works. We talked about some literature that we have read in class as well which led us to a short discussion about gender and what it means to be a feminist in 2019. Along with these topics we also discuss the representation for people of color in this genre that is made of predominantly white men.…
In our first episode we discuss the origins of science fiction. This episode we focus on the God Mother of science fiction Mary Shelley.
