The story begins with Mr. and Mrs. White living a quiet, uneventful life with their son, Herbert. One evening, a family friend, Sergeant-Major Morris, visits them and shares tales of his travels. He introduces them to a mystical artifact: a mummified monkey's paw, which, he claims, has the power to grant three wishes to its owner. However, Morris warns the Whites that the paw is cursed, and each wish comes with disastrous consequences. He tries to destroy the paw by throwing it into the fire, but Mr. White retrieves it, intrigued by the prospect of making wishes.
