On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology podcast. Hey, this week we have a guest on the show, Peter Pearson, who's brought the message on Sunday about prayer. One of the reasons we asked him to do this is because he's been trying to grow as a prayer for many, many years, and the Lord has answered that prayer for him, and he's figured out some things that have helped him along that journey of becoming a person of prayer. And he shares some of that. So today's episodes a lot about the practicality of how we learn to become people of prayer, but then we also are gonna talk a little bit about the shame and the guilt that we often feel related to prayerlessness. How do we navigate that? We'll discuss that in this week's episode, so let's dive right in.…
Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology podcast. Hey, this week we're talking about serving in God's kingdom, which means we're gonna try and guilt you and shame you into doing more and more for the church. Or are we? Ironically, Alex's message led us down a more invitational way of thinking about serving on Sunday. And how our life with God actually fuels and motivates our service. So, let's dive in to hear a little bit more about that.…
Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology podcast. Hey, Alex is back. It's been a while since we've had an episode with Alex here, and we are kicking off a new series. We're really excited because it's about the way of Jesus. And if you attend, You know that on our wall, we have this big statement that we are a church that wants to help people live in the way of Jesus with the heart of Jesus. This series is about the way of Jesus. So it unpacks for us really what our heartbeat is here at South. And so today, we'll dive into that without any further ado. Let's take a listen.…

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology podcast. We did not forget about you! Contrary to popular belief—based on the fact that we haven’t published an episode in the last several weeks—we’re back and excited to dive into the season of Advent. Today, we’re talking about Alex’s sermon, which presented the entire biblical story in one message. If you’re curious why he approached it that way, we’re going to discuss it. We’ll also explore one of the questions you submitted a few weeks ago about the tension between rest, serving, giving, and balancing those aspects of life. Let’s dive in!…
Hello, hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology Podcast this week. Alex and I talk about how bad we are at the thing we will be talking about. Should I tell you what we're talking about? No, you're gonna have to listen. Let's dive in.
Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology Podcast. On this episode, we talk about the election and we talk about the rapture. Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology podcast. Hey, this week, neither Alex nor I preached the sermon. But somehow, we still managed to talk for quite a while. How do we do that? Well, we talked about a fantastic question that one of you sent in, which guided the entire conversation. And actually, I think brought us some interesting discoveries about the nature of worship, the nature of repentance, the nature of fellowship and all of that. So, let's dive right in.…
Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology podcast. This week, we get to talk about one of the lightest subjects possibly known to man, which is the problem of evil, and I'm pretty sure we solved it, not quite; it's been a debate that's taken place probably since the foundation of the world, but we do our best to at least give you some different perspective of it. And so, let's dive right in. Why do bad things happen to good people? Is God good? Really? If bad things happen and all of those kinds of questions, let's dive in.…
Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology Podcast. This week, we are talking about sleeping and waking and what our generation struggles with that sort of lulls us to sleep and doesn't allow us to engage life to the extent that God would have us. So, let's talk about that right now.…
