Why Authentic Activism Requires Us To Build Our Empathy Muscle with Jared Angaza
Manage episode 268464827 series 2709801
How does one become an authentic activist that can truly make a difference? Identity Architect, philanthropist, Space for Humanity Strategist and activist Jared Angaza joins Press The Damn Button to discuss his journey and his advice for all of us in regards to strengthening our empathy muscle to change the world.
Jared was the very first person I reached out to as I was building out the strategy and value proposition of this podcast. Jared and I met in the hallway of the San Diego Convention Center as I was speaking at Social Media Marketing World 2019 and a mutual friend of ours said we should connect. As with most events things are chaotic and meeting new people usually goes as far as small talk, a couple of interesting filler moments then exchanging information and saying lets talk soon. With Jared it was different...
Jared isn't like anyone I've ever met and his presences within the first two minutes captivated me and we ended up talking for almost 90 minutes before realizing we should have been recording the entire conversation as we started sharing our philosophies on empathy, change and the role we each play in making the world a better place.
Soon after that conversation we got on Skype and talked for multiple hours and a true bond and friendship had begun. I was a guest on his podcast Noetic in April and I can honestly say it was the most profound and dynamic guest spot I've ever done. At the time we met so much of our focus was collaborating to bridge our worlds and unique backgrounds to make a difference and to help people change through our actions. The conversations we had back then weren't around Covid19 or Black Lives Matter or George Floyd but the message we shared was no different than the message so many are taking a stand for in the summer of 2020.
On this episode we breakdown a wide range of topics including:
How he's helped me realize that my silent support of BLM was actually more compliance than anything else and why I must become a better ANTI-RACIST and how the words we use truly do matter.
We discuss Jared's lifelong commitment to activism and what he has learned, the optimism he has for the future and what keeps him going even when it seems in many cases the bad continues to repeat itself.
Jared shares how he manages the balance of business and his role as a strategist for the International Human Space Program with his passion and life's work on pressing the buttons that matter to stand up for the injustices built into the systems and world culture today.
