peep podcast interview Newcastle City Crew Breakdancing B-boy Damon Mogg ( D-Rok ) peep go back to 1989 and ask about his thoughts on Tiffany’s Sidewalk breakin club. Affectionately known as ‘TIFFS’ was the brainchild of a man called ‘Stesh’ also from north east.
D-Rok explains being overwhelmed with the power of street dance and ‘Breakin’ with watching influential films of the time such as Beat Street and Wild style.
We discuss how the breakdancing and graffiti art form swept the national, and entwined itself within almost every school in the uk to solve a lot of anti-social behaviour such as bullying and negativity for break times and after school activities.
Damon Mogg sites Michael Jackson as an early influence and recalls seeing him moonwalk on national television. This influenced D-Rok to practice in his living room and engage in spinning on his head and practising ‘windmills’ in front of the TV.
peep podcast also take this time to reflect on the fashion of the time and remember ‘troop tracksuits’ and ‘Naughty By Nature’ hoodies - explaining that your clothes of the time, would single you out and reflect what your musical tastes were at that given time. Damon remembers football hooligans dressed in a similar style to Bboys and breakdancers, favouring the street fashion tracksuit.
Damon recalls Hip Hop musicians in Newcastle upon Tyne such as ‘The Scruffs’, ‘Sin Hoods’ and ‘Untamed Youth’ being in their infancy, but doesn’t remember any breakdancing at this particular time.
peep then go on to discus the formation of the ‘Newcastle City Krew’ and welcoming Belfast bboys ‘Bad Taste Cru’ into their family of friends and dancers. Damon goes on to discuss other social issues of breakdance in more detail as we develop the conversation.
