The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. In this month's episode, Jennryn Wetzler, CC's Director of Learning and Training, talks all things Open Education and Inclusive Access Textbooks with Trudi Radtke, former Open Education Project Manager at SPARC. InclusiveAccess.org is a community-driven initiative that launched in 2021 to raise awareness of the facts about automatic textbook billing. The initiative was developed by SPARC with generous support from the Michelson 20MM Foundation, and Creative Commons is one of the partners. This episode was recorded in June 2022, when Trudi Radtke was the Open Education Project Manager at SPARC. In this role, they spearheaded advocacy and implementation for initiatives to make education more open and equitable, including InclusiveAccess.org. Prior to working at SPARC, Trudi was an Education Technology Specialist, OER Specialist and open consultant in the California community college system. As an Open and OER consultant, they have assisted in the creation of over 120 open textbooks and several Z-Degree pathways. Trudi is passionate about Open and has advocated for OER at the state, regional, and international levels. Previously, Beth was dean of art and history at Khan Academy and director of digital learning at The Museum of Modern Art. Before joining MoMA, Beth was Associate Professor of art history and director of distance learning at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she taught both online and in the classroom. Previously, Steven was dean of art and history at Khan Academy. He was chair of history of art and design at Pratt Institute, where he strengthened enrollment and led renewal of curriculum across the Institute. On this episode of CC's Open Minds, CC’s Chief Operating Officer, Anna Tumadóttir, sits down for an interesting conversation with Sam Williams, the co-founder and CEO of Arweave, the company that created the Arweave protocol, a permanent archive of human knowledge and experiences on a blockchain. Creative Commons licenses are the first set of licensing standards to be deployed on Arweave. Sam has been immersed in open source since he was a kid, and started learning to code when he was nine. So it's no surprise that now he's passionate about building innovative software and solving complex problems in computer networking, and has built extensive experience in real-world mechanism design and implementation. Dr. Angela Haydel DeBarger is a Program Officer in Education at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Her portfolio addresses Open Education, with the aim of democratizing knowledge, creating inclusive and engaging experiences for learners, and advancing racial equity in education systems. Previously, Angela served as senior program officer for Lucas Education Research at the George Lucas Educational Foundation, where she led elementary and middle school project-based learning initiatives. From 2002 to 2014, she worked as an education researcher at SRI International. Her research focused on improving classroom pedagogy, specifically assessment strategies, to promote student learning and engagement in science. Angela has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University, a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan, and a doctorate in educational psychology from Stanford University. Yana is the Executive Director of Fine Acts, a TED Senior Fellow, Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and her most recent TED talk, focused on the concept of playtivism: incorporating multidisciplinary creative play and experimentation in activism has been viewed close to 2 million times. Pavel is chair of the board of Fine Acts, an Obama Foundation scholar at Columbia University, and a Royal Society of the Arts fellow. Tyler Green is an award-winning author, historian and art critic. Tyler is also the producer/host of The Modern Art Notes podcast , described by The Washington Post as "one of the great resources for all art lovers." Tyler recently published his latest book ‘ Emerson’s Nature and the Artists , ’ which brings together a selection of 75 artistic works in dialog with Ralph Waldo Emerson ’s 1836 Nature essay for the first time.
