Scott Bessent, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Treasury secretary, pledged to support sanctions against Russia, including measures targeting its major oil companies. He made the statement during his Senate confirmation hearing on January 16, CNBC reports.
“If any officials in the Russian Federation are watching this confirmation hearing, they should know that if I’m confirmed, and if President Trump requests as part of his strategy to end the Ukraine war, that I will be 100 percent on board from taking sanctions up, especially on the Russian oil majors to levels that would bring the Russian Federation to the table,” Bessent said.
Bloomberg described Bessent’s remarks as one of the strongest statements on sanctions against Moscow from Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Bessent also criticized the Biden administration, arguing that the sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine were “not fulsome enough.”
