Here’s a book you might enjoy if you liked “The Miniaturist” and “The Girl with a Pearl Earring.”
This historical fiction novel is set in Holland’s Golden Age. (The 1650s) Catrin is 25 when her husband dies. She leaves their small village to go work as a housekeeper for a family of merchants. The madame of the house takes classes from Rembrandt. One day Catrin (who probably shouldn’t have done this) took up a brush to finish some strokes her mistress left off, and Rembrandt suspects Catrin has talent, and encourages her. Meanwhile, someone from her past shows up, and Catrin flees to another city, Delft. She works at a pottery workshop that is developing Delft Blue designs. But a tragedy happens and she has to decide if she will stay and fight to keep all she has built, or return to the small village.
