October is a special month at Unity Spiritual Center. It is the time we honor our ancestors. For most of us, remembering those who came before us feels good. While others, find nothing to honor in those who came before us. How do we know whether our ancestors were good people or not? Why do we honor them? If our familial stories include addiction, violence, and the intentional doing of harm, why would we even want to give one moment of time to speaking the names of the "ones upon whose shoulders we stand?
