Rule and Reign – The Acts Community
Manage episode 420969270 series 1154876
‘I lean not on my own understanding’
God has a plan right from the garden of Eden, through to Pentecost and beyond. We’re encouraged to wait in an alert fashion on God, actively looking for Him, pursuing Him – for example, Matthew 25 tells the story of the 10 virgins; we’re told that five are wise, because they are active in their preparation, whereas five don’t prepare and aren’t ready…
Or later in the same chapter of Matthew, the parable of the talents tells the story of a man who goes travelling and provides his three servants with some ‘talents’ (units of currency). The first two invest what they’re given, doubling it. Whereas the third just waits passively with the talent he’s been provided with, returning it to his master on his return. It doesn’t go well for him.
Or later still the point is emphasised by the story of the sheep and the goats that God is going to separate from each other at the end of the world. The ‘sheep’ are separated out at the end of time because they took positive action – looking out for others while they were waiting for God’s rule and reign to increase.
The bible is full of such stories and it’s important to live in the knowledge that living in a Kingdom community is not to be seen as an escape pod from the world – but as an active, participatory place that seeks to bring the reign of the Kingdom of God where we live and work.
