Mistrial declared in third federal trial against labor leader John Dougherty

A federal judge has declared a mistrial in former union boss John Dougherty's conspiracy and extortion trial. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the jury told the judge they were hopelessly deadlocked after deliberating for more than 10 hours.

Dougherty and his nephew were on trial for allegedly threatening a contractor. Dougherty's attorneys argued he was simply doing his job, advocating on behalf of a union member.

This was Dougherty's third federal criminal trial. The first two ended in convictions, for which he will be sentenced in July.
