Can Lebanon elect a new president?

Lebanon’s deeply divided parliament is set Thursday to try to elect a new president, potentially ending a 2-year long political vacuum and ushering in a degree of stability for a country reeling from its bloodiest war in decades.

Suleiman Frangieh who was Hezbollah's candidate for PM said on Wednesday that he was withdrawing his name from consideration.

For more than two years Lebanon has been paralyzed by political gridlock and led by a weak caretaker government through a series of upheavals, including economic collapse, the destructive war between Israel and Hezbollah and the collapse of the Assad regime in neighboring Syria.
